Miles Davis and the "Full Nelson"? Can somebody ONCE AND 4 ALL, clarify the myth behind "Full Nelson" on Miles Davis' 1986 "Tutu" album.
:I: have heard varying stories including 1. He wrote a track years ago called "Half Nelson" 2. According to the Official AutoBiography "Full Nelson" is about Nelson Mandela 3. A track by P. was initially rejected by Miles Davis and this was the result. :I: think there has been a thread about this B4, but it remains a grey area. mayB should have posted this in the Musicians forum, but being prince related, it seems dually apt.
'dre Tried many flavours - but sooner or later, always go back to the Purple Kool-aid!

It's a Marcus Miller/Miles Davis colloboration.
Nothing to do with Prince at all. He might have been the inspiration musically, cuz they (Prince and Miles) were heavily eyeballing eachother (also musically) around that time; see the You're Under Arrest LP lying around Christopher Tracy's room in the movie UTCM. They had, I believe, played together a few times when Tutu was released. Musicians like that always show off, compliment eachother. Madhouse had a lot of MD in it. I know nothing about the explanation of the title, but I guess it's wishful thinking of over-eager Prince fans.

Oh, check some of Marcus Miller's solo albums. Then you know where the songs on Tutu stem from. He a funky dude.

"Half Nelson" was written by Miles and he recorded with Charlie Parker in 1947. It's a pretty standard bebop style tune. Prince had given Miles a recording of "Can :eye: Play With U" for the "Tutu" album which Miles and his band overdubbed parts onto, but it never made the album due to Price's request (he thought it didn't suit the rest of the album). As far as "Full Nelson", Prince had nothing to do with it. Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

There iis a brand NEW Miles Davis biography that just came out called "So What"( for those of you that read)
* Prince sent Miles Davis a total of EIGHT tracks- Miles went on to play 3 of them live ("Penetration"being the only title I remember). *Prince kept them ALL, and took back "Can I Play With U" after not liking it in the TUTU mix; * FULL NELSON is named after NELSON MANDELA; HALF NELSON is named after PRINCE. Glad to clear it up 4 u

Not true. "Half Nelson" was recorded before Prince was even born back in the '40s. Obviously it has nothing to do with him. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.
