Tom

Do other artists deserve as much for their work as Prince does?

We've listened to Prince's comments on how little recording artists get from the record companies.

In Prince's case he's got an argument because he plays almost all the instruments, writes all the songs, and sings on all of them as well. The whole thing is one big Prince production.

But does the same argument hold true for someone like Ms Spears, Shakira, and other folks who only do a fraction of the work? Someone else is playing the instruments, writing the songs, etc... In their case, is the money they are recieving now a fair amount you think?

Tom-

I think you have to break this down into 2 categories - the music itself, and everything else involved.

If you're talking only music, then yes - Prince is in that higher category of musicians. This includes (but is not limited to) Eric Clapton, U2, etc. His music is amazing (although sometimes the lyrics are questionable). His live shows - technically - are impressive.

NOW . . . having said that, let's examine the other side of show business: the PR game. Prince doesn't play this game well (you might say he doesn't have to, I disagree). He's rude, obnoxious, doesn't give many interviews or do many appearances. You have to consider all that when you ask your question . . .

These are all factors when you're asking how much someone "deserves". Gifted musician = yes. Nice guy = no.

Maybe I misinterpreted the question - but my immediate response was with another question...

"Does Prince deserve as much for his work as other artists?"

The reason I think it too should be asked is because it seems Prince is out of the loop when it comes to promotion by WHOMEVER puts his records out. Each commercial release seems to be released with a lot of hope it will be a "comeback," but yet there is still no radio play - no videos - few media appearances (albeit more concerts now than ever) - nothing charting - no "Rolling Stone" cover - no product endorsements - no movie deals. What gives?!?!

I read somewhere that The Police are slated to be inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. They've not even been united/reunited as a band in years - yet they are getting their credit. I'm not dissing The Police - I love 'em. BUT, Prince has continued to put forth a new release on somewhat of a regular basis since the late 70's. How fair is that?

You can't help but wonder if Prince has become the Little Richard of the last decade... never getting any recognition for his efforts. In my opinion, other artists (many no doubt influenced by the man himself) receive far more for their work -- without half the effort or talent -- than Prince.

I think that there are alot of great and TRUE artists out there. However as a Prince fan, I think he should get a lil more credit and recognition for his work. All of his songs if not most where made directed adn o forth by him. Alot of the artists today (AKA Ms Spears) Don't have that much tallent and have to use certian things to make themselves look or sound better. ( voice box, surgeries, etc.) Prince is a TRUE artist who doesn't need all that stuff. Sure everyonce in a while use the voice box and stuff like that, but not to EVERY SINGEL SONG!!!
This is why I really enjoy his music, becuase its from HIM. And as well as being very creative. In my opinion, I think that when it comes to the money, they should really consider the fact that it is n't really true material. But because they are role models that is what brings in the cash and the ploblisity and things of that nature. I wish people and especially the younger generation would realize what good music truely is.

Granted this is only my opionion I hope I don't get bashed or anything ifsomeone doesn't agree. lol
