I remember talking to this cat that used to work at WB in the 80's. He was a much older cat who was into Steely Dan, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, etc. But he respected P as an artist. He said that the word was around all over Warner's that P went to Mo Ostin and asked that Dez's album be "delayed" untill later in the year. Because P felt that perhaps it was "too much" product coming from his camp all at once during that summer. And plus, he didn't want Dez's album "conflicting" with his own. Don't know if any of this was the case but that's what this cat said was in the grapevine at WB during that time.

Since we're on this subject, I did a little math just to see how huge the movie itself was. Released on July 27, 1984, it grossed $68, 392, 977 according to Box Office Mojo.com. Now, by today's standards, if one didn't know better, he/she would think that's not much. But look at this. In 1984, a movie ticket costed $3.36 on average. If you divide the overall gross by that ticket price you get a whopping 20, 355, 053 tickets sold. Now that's huge considering that an overwhelming majority of the cast were virtual unknowns to mainstream America at the time.

Now adjust that to today's standards due to inflation. Today's ticket price is about $7.08, give or take. So simply multiply those tickets sold with today's ticket price and you get $144, 113,773. So, by 2008's standards PR grossed nearly $145 million in the US alone!

On a personal note, I rremember when my oldest brother taking me to see it. I was 14 at the time. I particularly remembered the girls screaming and losing their minds the moment P first appeared. Through my brothers I followed P since his second album and I knew he would get big, but never like this! After watching the movie, I felt a little sense of pride, obviously I was a big of P and still am. But, at the same time, I felt a little sense of innocence lost because I knew it would never be the same. Thanks Blackguitaristz for taking us down memory lane.
