The Word - Love it, hate it, or just 'meh'? On the "3121 - who thinks this album is too religious" thread, I posted my thoughts on the track "The Word."
The Word is a little too over-the-top preachy for me, and literally the ONLY track I skip on 3121. Besides listening to it the first time I played the CD, I gave this track another spin out of respect for my friend DreamyPopRoyalty, who had been singing its praises on her blog...but I just didn't feel it. Haven't listened to it since.
The music is cool: laid-back, jazzy, funky; it gets my head bobbin'. But the lyrics--esp. "Don't u wanna go get saved?"--really irk the crap outta me! UGH. My distaste for this tune is ironic, though, since I The Rainbow Children. I hate to sound like a hypocrite. I decided to post this thread to see what other orgers' thoughts were on this song: How do you feel about it, and why? Do you love it, hate it, or is it just 'meh' (average)? Vote tally: Love: 20 (WOW ) Hate: 0 Meh: 4 [Edited 7/29/08 11:07am] https://www.youtube.com/@PurpleKnightsPodcast

I was hooked the second I heard all that heavy breathing at the beginning. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

It's not the lyrics I find tiresome, it's the music.
He can be as hardline as he likes, but if it's wrapped in this drab, NPS/Rave era production, it's falling on barren ground as far as I'm concerned.

I LOVE this song. It's such an incredible song and it touches me a bit. It fights Black Sweat for being my favorite song off of 3121. Definately one of his best songs of the 2000's. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

The music to it is ethereal and hypnotic, but the lyrics ruin it. They are depressingly bad.
"Don't you wanna go get saved"? Really, Prince? It's not the religiosity of that line that bothers me, but the obviousness of it. The old Prince used to be a master of using clever metaphors to express what he really meant. The Prince of today just blurts it out tritely. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.
"You still wanna take me to prison...just because I won't trade humanity for patriotism."

The song is stating do you want to hear the word? do you want to get saved? Not really all that complicated. I love the music as this is the kind of music that contempory gospel signers cannot seem to do and the lyrics are positive and uplifting something that is definitly missing in RnB today. I kind of wish someone would cover it so it could be heard by more people.

The Word makes 3121 worth listening to. It has a trance like melody and the vocal sits confortably within the track without being too dominant - love the sneaky little guitar solo towards the end just to prove that the man still has it and then it just melds into Fury which is the perfect follow up track "Grace": "Do you always keep lingerie in your glove box?"
Morris: "None of my women wear gloves"

What I like about the word, is..."Come on, get up, Let's do something."
The music inspires you to really take to heart, that Loving the planet is something each person can contribute to, in their own ways...wherever we can... Taking as much responsibility into our own lives...will naturally lift the burden off of someone else's shoulders and together as a family...we can rearrange the mess... There is enough in the world for everyone to have what they need and some of what they want...(if anyone is at a poverty stricken level.)..Over time...the hungry dreamers, can feed their dreams after they have fed their basic needs...I know there are people that don't want to be the takers....waiting for someone to give them something...although, that is the only way it can be at first because the gap of money makers grows away from the poor. This gap has got to close. [Edited 7/29/08 2:20am] "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

I like this announcement and can testify:
What is this new exaltation That I just can't explain? What are these new inspirations That I can't get out my brain? How am I gonna sleep with this feeling Rushing all through my veins? Get up, come on let's do something Don't you wanna go get saved? And I deffinately know this feeling: Who's gonna save us when them spiders get next to you? Spinning their sticky webs around what you do We gotta safeguard against forked tongue and the treachery of the wicked one Get up, come on let's do something I love this song. It's good for the soul.

I'm so hopeless with lyrics... i always sing along to stuff and take no notice of what I'm singing.
I have to admit that I find myself doing a mental double take when I sing along to this.. (I'm and atheist) but it's a catchy tune and I find myself getting into it regardless It's weird though... christian rock bothers me, but I find gospel music awsome.. why is that? Anyway, I think we are all just going through a period of adjustment.
