The cover of the sign o' the times single controversy

i remember when the single first came out it was after the camille project had fallen through. The legend was that he was going to go on tour as camille. Prince was going to perform in drag with an adrogenous look. Prince had scrapped that idea but when i first so that single ... i thought it was prince on the cover!!!! It turned out 2 be Cat!!!. I thought that was very cleverly done. it had my brother and I going for a week or two.!! lol thumbs up!

No, you aren't. There are at least a few of us with a lick of sense.

It was a cool little trick to play, the top is similar to the Parade top, but the legs give it away. The reverse of the sleeve gave the answer:

Thanks for that!

I cant imagine why anyone would for one second think that was a pic of Prince!

Its obviously a female body and prince is defo very male looking.

Maybe Cat in "Prince Drag" is how Prince envisioned Camille.

The Camille show would have been amazing. Prince in drag as Camille would have worked in Europe but it would have destroyed his career in the US at the time.

Prince could have done the Camille songs as a Broadway show.

Actually Prince could still create a Broadway show. It would be fun.

I knew it wasn't him. Too curvy, the face is wrong, and the inny naval was a dead giveaway.
I did have to convince my grandmother who bought me the single though, "Don't worry, that's not him." lol

I never knew there was any confusion over the sigle cover. I always thought it was the cut-off face on the SOTT album cover that was ambiguous as to whether it was Prince or really Cat.

Really? I always thought Camille was his female side. Granted, "If I Was Your Girlfriend" works better as a male-voiced song, but Camille seems like a concept Prince tried to put forth as female (e.g., she "hates to see an erection go to waste," etc.).

Camille is called a boy in the tourbook for Lovesexy, I believe.

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

eek just out of curiosity, how can a woman b rockhard in a funky place if she's a female when the song is about the erection of a male? camille is/was a male all the time

Well, he's not singing about himself in the song. It's directed to someone else, so it could just as easily be a "woman" giving advice to a man as a man giving advice to another man.

Camille is a female in "Shockadelica." And in the odd Rolling Stone review of SOTT back in the day, if I recall correctlly, they referred to Camille as a new female singer Prince had found (obviously a mistake, but it set the tone for the idea that Camille was supposed to be thought of as a woman). Then there's the fact that Camille is a female name and Prince's voice was sped up in those songs.

But I get that Camille was a male. I just misremembered.
