Prince was a true revolutionary. All the stale internet rhetoric, middle age regrets aside, P is a punk-funk, wickedly strange, wonderfully perverted iconoclast. Prince kicked the ass of black radio, social contraints and gender role limitations.

Dirty Mind was a masterpiece on so many levels.

I saw the mike stand first too, and thought it was pretty riske... but lets get back to the earlier performances and the guitar masturbation.... how on earth did he get away with this?!!!!

People go on about Darling Nikki and the stage humping as though that was the height of his sex business. I think non-prince fans are under the impression that he got worse throughout hiw career... but they don't understand where he began.

I've read prince talking about DN, and how that wouldn't be considered pushing the envelope anymore... but for him back then it was so tame
AND
the guitar masturbation would still be controversial today... I mean its crazy!! sexy, but totally nuts

Oh, My, God! You got that right! Baby had calmed way down by the time 84 rolled around. Alot of people don't know about that boy in 81' that would go on stage nearly butt ass naked and jack off a guitar.
Let's face it, I've seen ALOT of male guitarist that make some kind of...connection between a guitar and their *cough*dick*cough* But I've never seen anyone take it as far as P did.
Lord, *fans self*

Well, being a straight brutha who's posting on a thread about P singing about Head, let me clarify myself. I remember when P played this club out here, actually it was a popular roller disco rink from the 70's, a joint called Flippers. This was during his Dirty Mind tour. By the time I heard about him playing there though, it was sold out. They were giving a few tickets away on the radio but I was never able to get through. So I missed that show. Had to wait untill he came back out to L.A. with his Controversy tour. Even during that tour, although he was still jacking off the guitar when he played the song Head, he was way up high on stage. Plus he was basically dressed. He had toned down his show quite a bit even on the Controversy tour. And this was Feb 1982. But my older cousin who did see P when he opened for Rick, (this show I actually had a ticket for but I got sick) he told me about what P was like. He said P was EXTREMELY wild. He said other cats were walking out and shit, waiting around untill Rick came on. Then he said a bunch of cats came back in when Rick came out.. He said I would have loved the music because P's band was straight rock. But he said he was way out visually. Even though he was making out with Gayle, he said everybody else just stood with their mouths open, not believing P was dressed the way he was. And switching and skipping back and forth across the stage. So by the time I got around to seeing P, he had jumped damn near conservative.

he still seemed to have that look though during controversy... crazy antics aside, he so mesmerising at this time. I don't think it would have mattered whether you were straight/bi or gay, it would be really hard to look away.
The only option would be to leave. right?

so these poor guys who felt they had to leave, I reckon, where just scared shitless about their reaction. Not suggesting that they are in the closet or anything, but Prince just gets you hooked in some inexplicable way and its scary, unless you are totally comfortable with your sexuality.

I'm a girl who likes really masculine men, usually, but Prince just draws me in (especially in these early years), and if I was a stright guy, that response would probably wierd me out.

anyway... just wondering if you knew what to expect and what you thought

Yeah, I knew what to expect and actually, I was surprised that P was sooo toned down. I remember seeing the Controversy and Sexuality videos. Plus shit I had heard when he opened for the Stones. So all of that combined with what my cousin had told me he was like, I thought he was going to be much more wilder than he was. I think that having The Time open up for him on this and the 1999 tours had a little to do with it. That plus I think P was moving slower and slower towards trying to get a more mainstream audience. Especially on the 1999 tour.

I played an audio Dirty Mind show for a friend once...and she said (during Head), "Okay...the music got really low...but people are still screaming. What's going on?"

I said, "Well, it's Head...so he's gotta be humping or licking or stroking something. Or all of the above. shrug "

lol
