She said it in an interview, and at one of the award shows she was asked who she would like to meet she said Prince.

I know one thing...."Dick's Pawn Shop," in Myrtle Beach....keeps playing the same damn commercial every hour....
and they sing..."We don't have a Jingle..." Sounds like a scavenger hunt for a musician.....

The sad thing is, an act like Miley Cyrus is a session musician as well, minus the musician...

I mean, it's not like she wrote, or arranged it, or had any input into the recording whatsoever, of any kind....

So why should she be entitled to millions when the session musicians are awarded a paltry sum?

It'd be different for someone like, say, Brian Wilson. Even if he didn't play the music on his compositions, he did compose and orchestrate them. It was his vision, they merely acted out on it. Or any artist for that matter who actually pens his/her music. But Miley Cyrus, I don't get.
[Edited 7/26/08 22:35pm]

Yea but really the same thing could be said about Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and numerous other icons...
It's all about popularity and marketability. Nameless/faceless session/studio musicians simply aren't responsible for selling big units and bringing in the big bucks - they're not the marketable factor in the equation...
Example: The reason the song Can't Help Falling In Love was a big hit was because Elvis sung it, HE was huge at the time, it was in HIS film, and HE had an enormous following - it was not because joe blow wrote it or freddy nobody played bass on it in the studio...
(Did it matter who held the boom mic on the set of the Titanic movie? - shit no)
The sad reality is it all comes down to the 'talent' thats attached to it
Pretty basic logic really...

Good heavens.

As far as Tommy goes, his keyboards also make an appearance on Backstreet Boys' Never Gone disc that came out in 2005. Mr. Barbarella's all over the pop charts, it seems.

do pop stars get paid 'millions' when they don't write the music though? I'm sure she gets paid well for her acting/ performing, but would she get royalties? I wouldn't have thought so.

It depends a lot on the contract and, as we've seen with other acts, the honesty of their parents/handlers.

Keep in mind that while the PopKids may not write, produce, or play instruments, they are still required to sing, tour, promote, work interviews, travel extensively, perfect complex choreography, behave themselves totally if they're required to be "role models", (more often than not, this requires some acting skill. No one is as perfect and well-behaved as the public demands these kids be) and on....in many cases this is done under working hours and conditions that, strictly speaking, violates child labour laws. Being a child star or a pop star's not a cushy job. These kids start serious work at an age when your average kid can't be arsed to remember to feed the dog on a regular basis. Say what you want about their acts, but you got to hand it to them -most of them work hard for their money.

So let me get this straight . . .

You feel bad for Michael Bland and Tommy Barbarella for being involved in one of the hottest acts around right now? Miley's CD is pretty much guaranteed to sell a gajillion copies.

They are musicians - as long as they are performing their musical instruments to the best of their ability, shouldn't matter who they work for.

Last I heard Miley Cyrus' trust is in the hundreds of millions range when she turns 18, so yeah, I'd say she's getting paid for something.

She's a product, and like the studio musicians, her input into the CD is probably nil. But she will get paid much better than those musicians, guaranteed. And I don't understand why. And it makes me sad sad

I doubt it.

tens of millions = maybe

hundreds = no.

I think these false estimates are put out their to glorify the entertainer.

Is she a living franchise yes, but she has to pay a good number of people to get through the day.

I'm not arguing with you about what you said at all.... Except there's often no talent to speak of attached to these products EXCEPT the studio musicians. It would be one thing if Miley Cyrus was an exceptional musician, or an exceptional performer, or an exceptional songwriter. But she's none of those things, she has no vision, no contribution of her own to speak of. She is meticulously crafted by others, and placed into the market as an image. She deserves no more credit for the massive success of the product than the studio musicians backing her. Probably less credit, but definitely no more.
