Miley Cyrus & The N.P.G.?

I bought the new Miley Cyrus CD 4 my daughter. The 2nd song -"7 Things"- Michael Bland is on drums and Tommy Barbarella on keyboards. I guess Prince was right " All 7 will fall. How far have the mighty fallen?

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

So let me get this straight . . .

You feel bad for Michael Bland and Tommy Barbarella for being involved in one of the hottest acts around right now? Miley's CD is pretty much guaranteed to sell a gajillion copies.

They are musicians - as long as they are performing their musical instruments to the best of their ability, shouldn't matter who they work for.

Yep, even if you are not her age demographic, you got to admit she is one of the hottest acts right now.
When you are as commercially viable as she is, they can afford to pay for talent.
Anybody know if they would get royalties as session musicians? If so, thn because of Miley's mega sales it looks to be a heck of a lot more than on a Prince record.

Nah, you don't get royalties for doing session work as a musician. You get paid whatever your rate is..a flat fee as an independent. Or if you're a member of the Musicians Union. Scale or whatever is worked out. Otherwise, unless you have your hand in the writing, nah....

If the music is used for other than radio (like commercials, backgrounds to concerts/awards shows and stuff), Union session musicians do get extra money. It's called "New Use" money.

Yeah, I know but that's not THAT common. I was generalizing on the "standard" which was session musicians don't get royalties. Not saying that scenerio doesn't happen with tracks played in commercials, etc. But it's not as common as just getting paid to lay down your part and then you bounce.

I know one thing...."Dick's Pawn Shop," in Myrtle Beach....keeps playing the same damn commercial every hour....
and they sing..."We don't have a Jingle..." Sounds like a scavenger hunt for a musician.....

The sad thing is, an act like Miley Cyrus is a session musician as well, minus the musician...

I mean, it's not like she wrote, or arranged it, or had any input into the recording whatsoever, of any kind....

So why should she be entitled to millions when the session musicians are awarded a paltry sum?

It'd be different for someone like, say, Brian Wilson. Even if he didn't play the music on his compositions, he did compose and orchestrate them. It was his vision, they merely acted out on it. Or any artist for that matter who actually pens his/her music. But Miley Cyrus, I don't get.

do pop stars get paid 'millions' when they don't write the music though? I'm sure she gets paid well for her acting/ performing, but would she get royalties? I wouldn't have thought so.

Well it depends on the demands of the star. Celine Dion can put her name onto a song she did not write and get paid the royalties from it along with the original writers. This happens because she sell so well, the guy or girl who wrote the song is likely to get a lot of money from sales etc so its worth them letting her do this.

I don't know much about this Miley, but at least she is using real musicians (and excellent ones too!) and not 100% machines.

Last I heard Miley Cyrus' trust is in the hundreds of millions range when she turns 18, so yeah, I'd say she's getting paid for something.

She's a product, and like the studio musicians, her input into the CD is probably nil. But she will get paid much better than those musicians, guaranteed. And I don't understand why. And it makes me sad sad
