Legacy

One of the copyright threads had a comment saying "Prince seems like he wants to erase his history" and it got me thinking. I think it's interesting to think of the difference between Prince as a "product" and Prince as a person. It's almost as if leaving behind a history of his music might water down the image of Prince the man vs. Prince the entertainer. Not saying this is at all what he thinks, but it was an idea that popped in my head. The music he makes are his creations and are probably pretty personal, even though they are released to the public. I don't agree with all the copyright stuff that's gone on, but I can see how someone would not want their memories/ideas to be changed or warped by someone else's performance of them after they are gone.

Do you think Prince even wants to leave a legacy in the form of his music or does that just become an issue of ownership as well? Ownership of memories is a pretty heavy thing to think about.

I believe that several perspectives of Prince will survive history...although, When, "The Rainbow Children," circulates within a younger generation...those perspectives will conclude...that a statement about erasing history...is only one view of a hypnotic unwind...or rewind to the missing link in the loop....After all...Time is an illusion that only gravity creates...We'll get there....

i just hope that the time out he's taking right now is to sort out some
of these issues.

i hope he's baking those tapes in the vault to secure them from rotting
to pieces.

i hope he's finally striking some deal towards remastering his albums so
we can finally enjoy them in crisp bouncing quality instead of this low,
crackling substandard quality that no artist should be proud of with the
means there are these days, especially someone who gets as worked up as
prince over his past music.

instead of another dubiously unstable new album i really hope he is just
taking time out to secure his own legacy.

remaster those albums, include an extra disc with bsides and other stuff
from those years.

revisit some of the side-projects like madhouse or the npg and get those
albums remastered and rereleased as well.

his legacy, for all he has released since the mid 90's, is still mostly
his 80's peak material. he should secure that. not let it dwindle or do
everything he can to denounce the more racy songs.

i can't really think of any artist who treats their own past as shitty
and disrespectful as prince seems to do. or with less of a care.

no one else is allowed to say anything about it or touch it to cover it
but he sure as hell doesn't do anything for it either.

I thought this thread was going to talk about physical legacy meaning family. My husband and I were discussing how things/talents/skills/genes are passed on from one generation to the next. Like say three generations of police or doctors in one family not to mention actors and singers. I love the way Prince has fulfilled his dad's dream. I think his dad was initally offended by the cursing and overt sexuality, but I also think they reconciled after Prince calmed down. I don't think Prince is as concerned with the past racier music not being 'remembered' as he is with it not being his only legacy. It seems that he has moved on and would prefer everyone else does too, but he will acknowledge his cleaner music to no end. I also hope he has a kid one day to past on those talented skillful genes to as well as his music legacy.

I shouldnt care, but I do.
I admit I always feel uncomfortable when I see people talking so much about Beatles, Led Zep, Hendrix, etc, as "classics" and covering their music in every bar, playing tributes and such, and not Prince. For me, Prince is one of the greatest songwriters of the century, but he is treated as a ´pop singer´ only.

It would be great if something was made to make the world realize what an artist Prince is. And let his music live after he dies.
