He seems to love singing this live - and always does it really well and makes it feel like an anthem!

It's very inspiring and has a really uplifting feel about it.

yeah with that feeling is what made me enjoy it very much

I was never into Kiss, but I love that Live version on Rave DVD.

Reflection..until i saw taavis smiley performance.
and Love from 3121..is the jam!!
Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

I love "Purple Rain" but remember being so upset that it was released as a single. I couldn't wait for people to hear "The Beautiful Ones" on the radio instead. What did I know, "Purple Rain" made it to #2 in the States.

Some of the songs I had a tough time getting into initially as a young 'un were "Let's Work" and "D.M.S.R." -- now both of those songs are in my top favs. If you ever have a chance, watch the video where Prince drops by Sinbad's show and opens with "Let's Work." razz

I would not dance to Controversy, the first time I heard that in a club I walked off the floor. I think I danced to it maybe twice in 25 years or so.

lol that annoyed me too when i heard it, but at least the "people call me rude..etc" part was good enough to let me... I don't know... "forgive" it coz he's just expressing his beliefs... I'm more annoyed when in live shows he becomes obnoxiously preachy by telling the audience they have to love god and Jesus or whatever... he forgets that his fans include Muslims, Jews, Atheists, Buddhists etc.. and they don't like that neutral coz there is a difference between saying YOU believe in god and TELLING others to believe in god... sorry for being serious here but had to get it off my chest wink

Believe it or not: "Adore". And I know I wasn't alone amongst my Prince buddies on that. Happy to report we all came around on that one.

I believe it, cause I still don´t get the song.

Same here!
Being a Prince fan I should love it!!,but I mostly skipped this song and still do.Nice ballad but imo he has a lot who are much better!

Could I see what your list of better ballads looks like?
I will not say that they're aren't better, it's just so hard to think of any.

Housequake - Thought it sounded weird. Repeated listenings and I "got it."

Sexy MF - I thought he lost his mind.

When Doves Cry - I thought it was "ugly" sounding.

Now I comsider them classics, of course.

"The Word" from 3121. Had the album for a while and it never really stood out. Played the album as my driving music one week and I really started diggin' it.

If I Was Your Girlfriend - Now it's one of my favorites but at first listen I thought it was too elemental. The bass and groove take away too digest and the brilliance of the lyrics I'm still digesting.

When Dove's Cry - So obtuse and brilliantly strange. Never anything like it on radio and it takes away before your musical brain wraps around it.

All The Critics - Initially thought of as a throwaway jam but now I love the cool, quirky, introspective quality of it.

Great thread - so much of P's catalog takes a few listens to absorb the brilliance underneath. For example, in my mind Kiss was initially a JB castoff, and know I don't know how he got that sound. I've never seen him recreate it live.

2 be honest,it took a while be4 I liked some of those soul-ballads,
Never been a big fan of songs like Insatiable or Scandalous.

But..here are some real great ones:

Damn U
Sweet Baby
She gave her angels
Under the cherry moon
Condition of the heart
Still would stand all time
Saviour
The love we make
The beautiful ones
The question of U (now this one sure is better..not?)

None match 'Adore'

'Adore' to me is a powerful and focused declaration of love and adoration.
Prince is in awe of the love this person inspires. I know that feeling.
Here, there is no one else, no question of his devotion and passion. This song isn't sung to any woman but to a particular woman.
The flip side of Adore to me is The Beautiful Ones.

I didn't appreciate Around the World In A Day when I first heard it. Always skipped that one, but now I find it absolutely darling! All the little babies sing around the world.

I wasn't diggin his remake of Betcha By Golly WoW either but as I look back, especially the video, I realise how hopelessly romantic the dude. Just like meself! That brotha make me wanna birth his baby! licking sperm
