I didn't notice it being any more religious than most of his other stuff. It's personally my favorite Prince album of the 21st century.

thats interesting, i take it you dont have a religious background then?

I mean if you did, you might hear the difference between these songs and his old songs that ponder the question of spirituality rather than preach it.

People have short memories here. if you listen carefully you'll find the Controversy album is pretty hard to beat when it comes to Pince being preachy. Hell, even the outtakes from it really ram it down your throat at times - The Second Coming anyone?

I'm not religious in the least. Because he's always had spirituality in his music I didn't take notice of anything being more preachy besides maybe The Word. Funny thing is that's my favorite track besides Love.

No I don't. It's no more religious than any other Prince CD in the past. No one was making a big deal about that kind of thing with the songs on Purple Rain, with Religious-type lyrics on Let's Go Crazy, Purple Rain and I Would Die 4 U. I think it's because Prince is more religious NOW as opposed to 24 years ago that this is such a big deal.

xactly, and i think it's about his conversion 2 being a JW that his spirtual songs get such a heckling about these days.

ever notice how lovesexy is mostly praised but yet a album like the rainbow children gets slammed?

3121 has it's moments of spirtuality but that is with almost every album in his entire career
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

It doesn't matter to me, because he's using the same type of songwriting technique to talk about religious subjects that he used to talk about sexual subjects. What's good for the goose...

a very interesting viewpoint I hadnt thought of that.

I guess hes as out there about all topics he likes

nod The Word is a little too over-the-top preachy for me, and literally the ONLY track I skip on 3121. Besides listening to it the first time I played the CD, I gave this track another spin out of respect for my friend DreamyPopRoyalty, who had been singing its praises on her blog...but I just didn't feel it. Haven't listened to it since.

The music is cool: laid-back, jazzy, funky; it gets my head bobbin'. But the lyrics--esp. "Don't u wanna go get saved?"--really irk the crap outta me! UGH.

My distaste for this tune is ironic, though, since I love The Rainbow Children. I hate to sound like a hypocrite. shrug

Well, we can all say what we want to, and some mean what they say, but I think we would all be excited to have an album that compared to 3121 release this year. He did not redefine rock and soul with it, but he laid down a good album... a good solid album. that's what i like. I really don't like the compilations of songs that just aren't up to par... you know... like Crystal Ball.
We are all so full of doody here
