"RUMOR/SPECULATION"--Prince contributed to Coachella not making money this year

Midnight Sun
Sun reporter Sam Sessa covers the city's after-hours sceneĀ«

Did Coachella lose money?
I heard second-hand (but from a good source) that this year's Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival lost some serious money.

According to this source, festival promoters shilled out a few million dollars to book headliner Prince (pictured), and it didn't pay off in ticket sales.

Also, organizers decided to scrap this year's Virgin Festival in Vancouver a few weeks ago for "various reasons."

And attendance at this year's Bonnaroo festival was down from last year.

Here I am writing about how festivals are once again popping up around the country. Maybe that's not the case after all.

Or this bad news could just be a fluke.

Thoughts?

Misleading ...

The festival was experiencing slow ticket sales before he was booked ... He wasn't originally scheduled at all .... they booked him at the last minute to boost sales, and that didn't wind up making up the difference.

i think it would have fared much worse without prince's last-minute inclusion. his asking price probably didn't pay for itself in any additional ticket sales made after his inclusion, but it did drum up buzz for the festival this year, which before his inclusion wasn't exactly one of the hot festival tickets this year (like it was last year, at least). maybe if prince had been listed in the original line-up, more excitement could have been drummed up and it would have been more of a success when all was said and done.

whatever the case, prince's appearance did coachella more good than harm.

Yeah, last minute big bookings aren't going to encourage people to just pack up their jobs and travel somewhere unless it's someone with legions of fans everywhere who never tours and it's a once in a lifetime opportunity. His fee probably lost them money because of it, but if he'd been booked a bit earlier it might have sold out.

well, some of us are fans of music festivals. you may not be, and that's great, but some of us are, so it could be relevant to our interests. smile

It shows you that even in a progressive state like California, there is still ant-homosexual sentiment towards performers in open air festivals. disbelief

Well, what do Music Festival Promoters do when they have lost out? Listen to the radio like everyone else that can't afford to go to a concert at all? cool

I don't see how adding anyone, esp an act like Prince to Coachella would have made a difference. The young folks going out to that could really care less about Prince. How about making the line up amazing like I've seen it before...that would probably translate into more sales.

Blame it on a bad economy. Concert tix sales are down overall. Airline fares have made impulse travel to out-of-state concerts prohibitive.

Even if the their decision to add Prince to the line up was an attempt to boost sales, you still can't blame Prince. People make plans for these events ahead of time, so you can't expect a last-minute addition of an act to have a huge impact. If Prince had been on the roster from the beginning, maybe that would have helped. And even if Prince's asking price was high, the show organizers agreed to pay it. They could just have easily said no and had the festival without him.
