DMSR The First Decade-the books greatest hits From the book DMSR The First Decade,..these passages trip me out a bit hehe:
Pg195- Later in April, Prince and Susannah separated after living together for only a few months. Some insiders blames pressures brought on by problems with the new movie. “Prince had a lot of things going on, but he wasn’t happy with his life at that time”, says Susan Rogers. “He knew he had made some serious judgement errors in making UTCM. I came to the house one morning and Susannah said, ‘Oh, we had a terrible night last night. He was lying on the floor, face down, all night, repeating repeatedly that he hated the movie’. He was miserable. It was after the film was done, but it hadn’t been released yet. He knew it just wasn’t happening” Ahhh Princeee Pg129-The title track (Purple Rain) came together on the 1999 tour. Bobby recalls Prince playing the chord changes of the song during rehearsal in Cincinnati in December 1982. “It was so different. It was almost country. It was almost rock. It was almost gospel.”. Matt Fink believes Purple Rain was influenced by Bob Seger. “I told Prince to do a song like that. When we were out on the 1999 tour, Bob Segar was shadowing us, playing everywhere we went. Prince said ‘I don’t understand the appeal of that stuff’. I go, ‘It’s like country-rock, it’s white music. You should write a ballad like Bob Segar writes and you’ll cross right over’. And he did!” Woikin on the night moves...like a rock...We Got Tonight Pg129-Aug 1983 First Avenue concert—Bobby Z asserts:”it was the ultimate hometown gig. It was a hot August night. It was like 90 degrees in there. Humidity was just exhausting.” Using a mobile recording unit that was brought in form New York, the concert was recorded by David Leonard and David Rivkin. “I didn’t know the recording was going to be an album at all”, says Rivkin. “I was just trying to do a good job, recording a live concert. I think we looped a football crowd underneath, so it sounded like everybody was cheering, because nobody really applauded! They weren’t familiar with the songs. It was weird, because it was really interesting stuff, but nobody knew it.” I gota get out Aug 83 and listen etc or watch..I thought they were clappin.. Pg. 128- Vivacious forthright, and with a keen sense of humor, Wendy shook Prince up and made him laugh. She wasn’t afraid to stand up to him and tell him what she thought. “Everyone else was more or less intimidated by him. I remember one time, it was summer, and Prince was sitting at a keyboard. He was playing with no shirt on and Wendy reached over and pulled his underarm hair. And he brought his elbow into his side, said ‘don’t!’ and resumed playing. She reached over and pulled it again and he said ‘cut it out!’ And they had a mock fight, kind of slapping each other. Not even his girlfriends were that informal with him. She was the only person who was that way with him and he loved it”-Susan Rogers LOL..grabbin his hair and Prince yelling don’t and cut it out lol and one of my favs- Pg. 148 With the Purple Rain album hitting number 1 the week after the film opened, Prince was enjoying a higher profile than ever before he reached the zenith of his popularity in the second half of 1984. It was exactly what he wanted. “He got what he wished for”, Rogers reflects. “But unlike many young artists who might have reached that stage and just lost it, Prince had the bull by the horns. I remember one day, he was at the warehouse. He was so happy, he was dancin around. Myself and someone else both went to ask him a question, and we both said ‘Prince!’ at the same time. He swung around on his heel and said, ‘I must be famous!’. And I looked I his face and I realized that he was famous, and that he knew he was famous and that he was delighted to be famous. I think that was a very productive and happy time in his life” Hehee Prince dancin around…then swinging around on that heeled boot.. Pg221- Back in MN shortly after Xmas, alone in a studio except for Rogers, Prince recorded a song called “Wally” that ostensibly dealt with his break-up with Susannah. Even though the lyrics don’t refer directly to the break-up, the emotional statement of the music leaves no doubt as to the sincerity of Princes pain. ‘I thought it was the greatest thing he had done”, says Rogers. “There was so much pain that came out in that song. It was heartrending. He was just getting all this poison out of his system, all this pain. I had waited years to hear Prince do a song like this. I ached to hear him be this honest. He said ‘Do you know that maladi means sickness, illness in French? Its almost like melody isn’t it?’ I just couldn’t wait for people to hear this. Then he began to change it! All of sudden, he put on this weird percussion stuff and began to make it funky. I said ‘Don’t you think it was better before Prince?’ Maybe we should stop’ I knew he was destroying it deliberately. It was just too honest. At some point, he said, ‘Now put all 24 channels on record and erase it.’ I said ‘No, you can’t do this!’ He said ‘If you don’t, I will.’ And he did erase it. That recording will never get heard. He was feeling a deep pain and allowed it to show, but he didn’t want anybody to hear that”. According to Eric Leeds, “It’s the only time that he completely erased a song that he had just done. The only time. That was a very, very personal song to Prince, and I don’t think he had any intentions I the world of ever releasing it.” Prince did in fact re-record Wally from scratch a few days later, making it less personal song by changing some of the lyrics and recording a new vocal. The holy grail that never was Pg188-While working at the Samuel Goldwyn soundstage (working on Parade incidental music), Prince received a visit from Michael Jackson, whom he promptly challenged to a game of table tennis, using a table that had been set up in the middle of the soundstage room. “Michael said, ‘I don’t know how to play ping-pong!’”, Rogers remembers. “But Prince took one pad and gave Michael the other, and they started very politely volleying the ball back and forth. Suddenly, Prince said, ‘C’mon Michael, get into it,’ and he slammed the ball into Michael’s crotch. I was rolling my eyes!’ Oh god, he’s embarrassing himself’. But Michael knows how to handle himself and he didn’t seem to care. Then Michael started flirting with Sherilyn Fenn who was visiting Prince in the studio. Prince was pacing, but he wasn’t going to get into the game of flirting back. They said hasty good-byes”. . [This message was edited Sat Nov 9 18:55:28 PST 2002 by rdhull] "Climb in my fur."

I don't know about anyone else, but when I watch that performance, I feel SO strange. The research is so incredible and the fact that Per was able to interview so many of the players makes the book that much better. It blows away all of the other books about Prince. I can't wait until volume 2 comes out. My guess is that it is done but he is waiting until Prince is big again... it may be gathering dust for a while! hahaha.

I think gag orders have time limits to some of them...and Susan Rogers is a blabber mouth lol. But its cool coming from someone who was part of the recording process. Plus I think everything is to be taken with a grain of salt because I was taught not to believe everythig you read. BUT it is a good and fascinating read. The best, and the best before it was A Pop Life by Dave Hill (did I get the name right?). One thing..when I read this I loved it and hated it at the same time..because I was fascinated by the information, the info on th e recordings and ideas etc..and I hated it because it took away the mystery. The enigma was no longer there after I read it. Everything was explained. It made him human (corny I know). It was like I tok the blue pill. Im happy to have the knowledge but the fun-mystery is gone. I guess its about time anyways. [This message was edited Sun Nov 10 9:52:47 PST 2002 by rdhull] "Climb in my fur."

Yea, I gotta break that out too. Amazing that the response wasn't all that, huh? [/quote] yeah...on the tape I thought they were..Im figuring the writer was talking about after the new songs there wasnt a lot of reaction..because the audienc e were eatin up DMSR and others I don't know about anyone else, but when I watch that performance, I feel SO strange. Not to put too much on it but it's a little piece of history being made right there & I think it's kind of amazing. It's not like he KNEW he was making history that night, ya know? Incredible...
Ive seen the vid and it is the best performanc e ever bar none...they all sweaty on a small stage and Prince lokin like prince..the long stringy hair, odd outfits, the passion..he was still an enigma then and it was right before eh was to start filming Purple rain. This is the video that should be released..eff a Livesexy, P and The Rev Live 1985 etc..and yeah I felt strange. It was like history was being made. This performance is talked about by EVERYONE whos a Prince fan. I even remember distinctly the blurb about the performance in the random notes section of Rolling Stone back then. Then 16 years later seeing the actual performance ( thanks T)..I swear I freaked and damn near cried. Because it was perfect, beautiful, vintage as hell...and because I wished I could have seen it back then. I came late to the "real" bootleg-video world. I think if I had all this info and output I would have been put away in a sanitarium in the 80's. I couldnt have handled it then It's so funny that you're mentioning this! I have this image in my head of Wendy smiling, pulling his pit hair ever since I read this. It pops in my head every now & again for no particular reason, LOL. hell naww! And even if so who cares...I feel funy about it too. Because I have the same relationships with people..excpet Im Wendy at times fuckin with people who have airs about themselves and Im the only one who is alowed to "pull the underarm hair" and at ties Im the one who has airs etc and only allow select few to pull mine lol..Wendy was fearless..and princ e said she wantto live forever "maybe she will". he said that about her in that Aug 1983 performance. So even though I dog Carpet Munchers Inc., I do think they were cool before they got big heads ... If only he knew the price of that fame, lol. I bet he still loves it for the mostpart though. I don't understand people who WANT fame, it's wierd to me...
I think for the most part, people want fame so they can give...its my own theory and hard to explain. MJ flirting w/ a girl??? YEA RIGHT...
I know..seems like this part is bogus in parts etc...like embellishe d etc..but who knows..like Eddie Murphy said in RAW, MJ might be a badass behind close doors...moonwalk all over someones ass etc... "Climb in my fur."

I'm right there with you. I avoided reading books about him for years, but I finally gave in when people here kept talking about DMSR. As fascinated as I was reading about his process, I knew they would dig all in his ass about the women, etc. & I don't need to know all that. The kids that used to say he looked like a dog when he was little, the phone booth call to his dad, the X episode that freaks me out to this day. All that embarrassing stuff that you wouldn't want the world to know - it's heartbreaking... shank it... [This message was edited Sun Nov 10 14:38:49 PST 2002 by CalhounSq]

I have the Sound & Vision 1 boot that has a CD-Rom of the concert in it's entirety. The quality isn't great but you can still see everything. The most trippy thing is knowing it was Wendy's first night onstage (can you believe that???) and his THEN rendition of A Case of You. His version now is 50 times better, he's learned to express himself in so many different ways musically now, it's just more mature, appropriate, poignant...

One the one hand it's funny that Prince would challange Mike to a simple game of ping pong, and Mike acts like a friggin wuss. But also P being being a true ass and hitting Wuss Mike in the crotch accidentially on purpose. And two, Prince would be jealous of Mike because he was flirting with Sherilynn Fenn and then go on to actually persue and screw her to make a point if only to himself. I had a shitty copy of the '83' first ave. on vhs for a long time and then got a great copy. This has to be one of my all time shows to watch. Raw and brilliant. Nice to read all the unheard back ground about Prince. Yeah, took some of the mystery away from him but makes me appreciate the genius in him. Uknown to many of how much of a musician he really is and original. This book is great. Wish some of the Celebrations would surface up on video too!! Oh yeah, today is my 12 year anniversary with my wife. Yeah!!! Peace. "
