Prince & Ratings. Prince & Ratings.
This topic is about the idea of capturing a possible viewer for a music oriented award show. In general, ratings have a range between people that are extremely too busy to turn on the television, and people on bed rest that never change the channel the award show is going to be on. You cannot take statistics on first time viewers, because you don't know who those people are going to be...You can only make assumptions, which are infinite in predicting a show's capacity for viewers. I will mention a few factors. We can assume that music lover's are a 50/50 chance that their household will be tuning in, regardless of scheduled acts, and those that are going to watch based on their favorite performer appearing. Record sales of the year...are taken into consideration. Competitive programs, are fighting for attention, unless you are the Disney or family channel that is catering to kids. I intend to add to this thread, if people want to talk about this...I am curious...about Prince's fans opinions about his ability to draw viewers to the program. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

Prince has shown through the decades he knows how to play the ratings game, by hopping on the Grammy train, the superbowl train, the MTV awards train.
And that is okay. It is too bad he hardly ever stays with a concept these days, unless when it's to push a ridiculously commercial run of concerts.

I'd say he does have the ability to draw viewership as exhibited when he was on the Jay Leno show recently. Most of us tuned in and those overseas were searching for the show's airing in their respective countries.
Alot has to do with promotions though, if it isn't promoted as "Prince is a guest" it would be difficult to determine.

I know that Prince has ability to draw viewers. A television show...is trying to divert other people away, from something else they may be watching. That is where time slots, play a part...as well as age...
The responsible 9 to 5 employee that has to go to work...probably isn't watching tv at all, after 11pm. Hollywood senior citizen's vs. the standard senior citizen, are two different styles of people. My main objective here...is to discuss...the power Prince may have...to lure..Radio listeners to the confinement of a box, because that is one very important factor. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

Spcifically what sort of "box" are you referring to?

People that need to be entertained by audio or visual, are those at battle in the air.
How does a television producer, that has done his best premeditative work, for the sake of successful rating statistics after the show has aired....draw Mr. and Mrs. Radio, to the couch to sit down and watch a musical performance. That is an important factor in a possible boost...Just like some people, or women perhaps will only watch a football game if it is the Superbowl, or their favorite team. I am a music lover, that loves other kinds of entertainment, however, as someone that likes to absorb knowlege moreso than watch a movie I will like or dislike...makes me one of those less likely viewers. If I am happy with radio, and cd's and the fact that I can read a book at the same time... If you are a television producer...You had either have something that I really want to take into my spirit and mind...a possible documentary for example, or Prince on...or else I'm gonna listen to the radio. So my point has been made. Prince also has the ability to draw at least one person out of the radio sky...for tv sky. Good job Prince, you aren't a great documentary on the History Channel, but you get me to sit down in front of a square. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

I bet Prince could do a "webcast' concert and people WOULD tune-in...what do you think about that concept. ~~ kinda off topic, but...
