Our Destiny / Roadhouse Garden

Anyone here remember John Bream's 1984 book on Prince? It was one of the first Prince bio's that I bought. He wrote about the '84 birthday gig at First Avenue at which Prince played a string of songs that knowone had heard up until that night. He mentions Our Destiny but not Roadhouse Garden which I thought was odd. Especially since Roadhouse is much more "catchy" than Our Destiny. Now I've heard Our Destiny / Roadhouse Garden but was the recording only from rehearsal and not the performance? Also, does anyone know of studio versions of these songs? Although Our Destiny doesn't sound like the greatest song he's ever written, Roadhouse Garden is very cool and it would be nice to have a clean version of it. Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? Ferris Bueller?

According to Wendy Melvoin, there was never a separate song titled 'Our Destiny' and both sections of this performance were part of one suite-like composition entitled "Roadhouse Garden".

Cool thanks. Now was this ever recorded in studio? My version is so bad I can barely understand the vocals.

there probably is one but it has yet 2 surface
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Of the circulating material these are the two tunes I most want to hear. I've heard most of the boots (have the work series etc) these two have passed me by though. sad

Apparently there was work done on one of the live recordings of the "Roadhouse Garden" suite, with strings overdubs written and directed by Wendy & Lisa. An excerpt from those string parts appears as a segue between "Pop Life" and "The Ladder" on AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY. You can almost sing the "Our destiny..." chorus lyrics over them.

Interesting, I never knew that...might have to try a little mash-up and see how it sounds...

Unless you have Soundforge and use the time compression feature, you'll probably have some timing issues with that, since the string arrangement on AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY is a bit slower than any of the live versions of "Roadhouse Garden". If you do try it, let us hear it - if at all possible!
