While Prince bitches about the Internet, Trent Reznor just invents cool ways to use it

http://theguide.latimes.c...drainpipe/

The band posted a file to its website with concert tour locations a couple weeks ago that visitors could download and open in the Google Earth software. Last Friday, a mysterious place marker appeared on the map, labeled “under the rock,” that pointed to a location in Burbank. Beneath that rock was an envelope giving the lucky discoverers entree to the show.

That event kicked off a viral campaign that puts fans in treasure-hunt scenarios, but with the pressure-cooker timing of an episode of “24.” Trent Reznor and Co. have a reputation for these unusual stunts. The band launched an alternate reality game in 2007 for its “Year Zero” album. That adventure sent fans digging through a digital trail of cryptic websites, calling phone numbers and analyzing digital files found on memory sticks in concert venue bathrooms.

Reznor, a Los Angeles resident, has long given special treatment to fans in his home city. He arranged a secret show in April of last year for local fan club members, who were contacted by cellphone and told to meet in Echo Park.

Message boards were buzzing all weekend about the Friday event, as local NIN-heads waited for the second concert ticket treasure hunt. That time came around 7 p.m. Monday when the next marker, titled “in the drainpipe,” appeared.

BTW Reznor also occasionally post comments on Echoing The Sound, and when the people from the HydrogenAudio forums recently discussed the high-quality wav files NIN.com distributed FOR FREE via BitTorrent (using The Pirate Bay's tracker) and found an error, several people from the band responded (including Reznor, IIRC), actually fixed the files and gave props on NIN.com. Some of you might remember how much bitching it took before the Prince camp was willing to upgrade crummy mp3s to slightly less crummy mp3s back when the NPGMC started -- and that was stuff we had to PAY for.

That's pretty cool...

And a valid comment too.

No doubt the hardcore 'fams' will attack, but i dig the point you're making.

Well, Prince led the way with the Internet back in the 90's. So, maybe he's done all he wanted to do & got bored. But I see ur point. I wish Prince was still doing these types of things. confused

You still whining about that? Trent Raznor has said that Prince is one of his heroes, but they are each individuals, who knows he may change his mind in a couple of years too.

Prince does as Prince wants. No point bitching and wishing he was someone else. He'll change his mind when he feels the time is right. The more so-called 'fans' push the more Prince backs off. I think we might have got something akin to Crystal Ball 2 by now but for all the moaning and slagging him off at every opportunity.

I'da thought that it was obvious by now. The man owes us nothing, so when we DO get something, i for one will be happy.

I have been in the past, and i have faith that i will be in the future.

Cancelling Dublin aside, i like Prince, even if he doesn't grant my every wish release-wise.

Patience folks.

It doesn't matter what guys like Reznor do.. People aren't buying CDs, they are downloading..

Most of these groups are forced to give songs away, and add other perks so it's not that innovative..especially the way that MTV is going now.

I think Prince was innovative and ahead of his time with the internet thing. He "got" it before anyone else. The only thing he didn't "get" was the fact that not everyone had good connections to get the goods. He was way ahead of his time.

Of course once others started to get into it, he lost interest. I find it no surprise that once he got his webby, he shut the place down.

Big yawn Bart Van MyBullocks. You've been complaining about Prince for the last 10 years or so.
Just listen to your 86-88 tunes and forget about the rest if you don't like it. Does it really matter if Prince is a talentless selfish egomaniac prick to you ? Who gives a flying fuck really ? lol

lol I know. He talks about the new and current things others are doing and points at Prince laughing. Does he really want Prince to put up new material he's not going to like in the first place?

I like Trent, but everybody has to do their own thing.
Trent gets off on this, fine, It's just him getting his own kicks, this is not a bussiness model or for gods sakes!, lol, its just some dude that gets off on this.

Prince wants control of his work thats fine too!

neither is wrong, neither is a perfect model of anything.

It's like saying my dad is stronger than superpeman!, kiddie bullshit

Reznor sold all 2500 copies of the $300 edition of Ghosts in ONE DAY.

Reznor has distributed stuff for free via BitTorrent for years (two DVDs, three compilations,...). Nobody forced him. He has a remix site where he himself has uploaded a ton of rare and unreleased mixes. Nobody forced him (actually, his record company opposed it).

BULLSHIT. Crystal Ball was at first only avaialble by CALLING A PHONE NUMBER. And yes, that was at the time that Amazon was already a big success. Some of us were there when the shit went down, and at each and every turn we offered suggestions for improvements.

Yes it is. it's called KEEPING YOUR FANS HAPPY and it is the CORE of any decent independent artist business model.

violetblues said:

Bzzt, wrong. Let's see: does Reznor have to pimp his records to a major label that then decides on when to release it and how to promote it? Nope. http://www.ninwiki.com/The_Slip

The Slip (also known as Halo 27) is the eighth and latest studio album from Nine Inch Nails. It was released as a free download on May 5, 2008

[...]

According to a Rolling Stone article, the album was finished May 4th and sent to Sudjam, the company that manages nin.com, at 9:30 p.m. for a midnight release.

Didn't Prince promise something that?

What was Prince's business model for his latest album? Oh yeah, he sold his latest album to a rightwing/racist newspaper. Whew, how innovative.

They're all symptoms of the same disease. His lack of innovation, his "get off my lawn" approach to the internet, his failure to make relevant music while desperately wanting a hit,...

Isn't it funny how the quality of his music et al went downhill fast after a lot of talented people left his organisation, and he remained with a bunch of yes men? That's not a coincidence.

Prince made a more on the internet in it's earlier days, and set
everything-up for the other artist to do so..

He did not do it perfect, but he was the first.

He probably made more money doing it, he's just not talking about how much he made, or comparing himself to anyone else...because he was the only one attempting to do it 8-10 years ago.

The interent has allowed for a great ammount of angry folk to just post anything: Lies, rumors, and 1-sided stories without proof or further investigations.

He probably grew tired of it.
