to me that kinda matches prince career. people always talk about the number of songs prince has written but lets be honest most of it is shit(newpower soul?)!

Even if an argument could be made that he was, at times, the worst artist of the 20th century, he generally slid even further than that end of the continuum and more often than not landed himself as the best. Whenever critics have written him off, he's kept coming back to accolades, and I suspect, always will. Ultimately, it's all gravy. He's widely regarded as an elder statesmen of music now. Whatever mistakes or missteps he made, it doesn't matter. In another words, like Jimi, he's become a rock legend.

i think a lot of prolific artists have made some weird/uninspired/iffy albums. i think it's the downside to being a prolific artist. not every album or every song is going to knock it out of the park, but even the weak links are part of the bigger story.

also, take a look around the threads in this forum. people can't agree on ANYTHING in terms of what's brilliant and what's crap. there are people on here who think "newpower soul" is a fine album and other people who believe "purple rain" is an incredibly overrated album. i mean, you know, god bless them all, because who's right and who's wrong? it's all opinions.

i dunno. i think prince being the worst artist of the 20th century is a bit of a stretch. after all, he's no stacey q.

I don't know why "New Power Soul" gets so slept on. Between "Come On", "The One" and "Wasted Kisses" you've got three of the best songs he did in the whole 90's.

I would say that he has one of the most tragic stories when it comes to his music choices and his business choices.

He has shot himself in the foot time and time again and finally the buying public got sick of it only to leave him with a very small group of die hard fans.

Prince wants control of everything and I mean everything. His recent decision to fight Youtube and similar web promotions is crazy. The man wouldn't know marketing if it slapped his skinny ass front and center!

He used to be really interesting and super intriguing. His music was dark and mysterious. Now it's tacky and tired.

So NO he's not the Worst but he is tragic.

I definitely would not say worst artist. I do believe that Prince has released the most amount of music that didnt appeal to everyone but thats what makes P who he is. When he dropped his albums nobody had done anything like that so he is always trying something new and different instead of creating the same stale ass stuff as these other cats that are out here. I dont think people understand the great risk he took by coming out with this very feminine and sexually open image but guess what it worked and look at him now.

Just because in comparison your springsteen,stevie wonder,james brown he'll come last in your list doesnt make him any less of an artist. IMO people talk so much about how much he writes because what he writes, unlike most artists, are of quality and substance.

A prolific genius is obligated to make more crap music than anyone else. Constant perfection makes other people feel small. Prince has been very accomodating, I hope he makes more crap music so other artists can feel better about being average.
