Just my guess but,you know how Christmas is played out to be a happy holiday with freinds and family ?? Well,not if your lonely or have family troubles it can actually be the worst time of year for some when the suicide rate is the highest and so maybe he felt bad on many occassions because of that or it's a way to help someone to get thru a time like that "We all got a space to fill" | |

I think the song is about the last year, last month, last day of your life.
December is the last month of the year, and if Time runs out then December would be the last month of all time. (like they say 2000.zero zero, party's over, out of time. so tonite I'm gonna party like its 1999. December 31, 1999. If it's your last december. How did you live your life, Good, Bad, or somewhere in the middle. When its over all that will matter is what you did while you were alive. Thats what it means to me. I think it is another song about Jesus and the after world.
He says when the Truth arrives (Jesus said I am the way the Truth and the Life) Prince often refers to Jesus as the Truth. When the truth returns will you be lost on the other side, The other side of the Way, the Truth and The Life. Will you be alive, Those who except Jesus shall Live again. And shall never die.
