I would be very interested to know which albums were written/recorded on which drugs totally from an eduacational background.

Go listen to Stevie Ray Vaughan's first three records. The first one is blistering and filled with urgency. He was drinking. The second one is much richer and the playing is more expansive. He did that one on coke. The third one is considered a throwaway without merit - that was drinking and coke. Then the live album which is considered a low point in his career.

And then he goes into rehab and it sticks, and he records In Step, which many regard as his brightest. Me personally, I love his second and third albums - the playing is just possessed.

That's one example. Jimi Hendrix. The first album was probably a little bit of this and a little bit of that, but by Axis Bold As Love he was flying high, and the playing and lyrics reflect that.

Take the Beatles. Some folks love the Gee Whiz early crap, and some folks think the LSD laden later records are the greatest thing since shoes.

So then, for Prince, you've got an extremely prolific artist who's gone through maybe 15 re-births, musically. I would LOVE to know which ones were affect by which material. Was Dirty Mind coke-driven? There's a very raw sexual drive in that one that's almost completely absent in LoveSexy. I would guess that by LoveSexy he was clean and looking for that spark in other ways. And then by the Gold Album, maybe there was some other drug or something he was messing with.

I'm just saying. Prince is prolific. And certain records have certain moods. It would be great to know which ones were totally clean, and which ones were buried in habits and a desperation to pull out of a downward spiral. Sign O The Times for instance, his greatest record, written while he was pulling away from the Revolution. Why would he ditch the whole band? I've always figured he was getting into things that the band might not have approved of, so he went off and did his own thing.

Therefore, it IS an interesting thing to ponder. Not just to high-five my bong-buddy and say "i KNEW it!!" but instead to think for a minute "oh, yeah, Around the World In A Day is SOOOOO LSD. Now it all makes sense".

So there. Nyah. Pass me the bong and cut me a line.

Okay, my question is, does someone need drugs to go through these prollific changes though? Why can it not be simply just the frame of mind that he was in at the time? Funnily enough bouts of depression and grief can cause many different emotions and changes in a person resuleting in their "dark side"
U can also get a different mood if u are feeling uphoric and joyful about life because some change was brought about that switched ure perspective.
Ask anyone who suffers depression about their moods and changes in their every day outlook
Its the same thing with being "trippy" I'll use myself as an example here I can be really silly when I want to be and I have had people ask me seriously if I am on drugs...which I am most definantly not...infact I dont even drink.
I have heard many a non drug using musician say that a "moody" or "trippy" ablum being bought about by the changes in their life...the birth or death of a loved one of the re-discovering of a faith
Personally I dont think this has to be drug fulled to be so. If P did drugs of any kind so be it....I think he's far from a Saint....but Im not buying it

I don't think he has done drugs. If there's anything to that ecstasy story, I tend to believe the version where Anthony Kiedis slipped it to Prince with him knowing it.

Great artists can be great without drugs. Look at Bruce Springsteen.

There are certain clips, shall we say, where it looks that way - halfway through Delirious in the P & the Rev. Live tape, he seems to take something from someone in the audience close up, the whole clip of Prince and Sheila E. in her 85 concert, where though he's dancin' great, he looks and acts like he's on something (those odd facial expressions don't seem to be his usual shenanigans), and most recently in the "Turn Me Loose" performance on The Tonight Show, where it could be a guitar pick that he drops on the floor, or it could be a baggie
(after he has fans his face like he's smelled something bad, then Jay Leno goes to step on it to cover it up, but doesn't look down when he does it.)

HOWEVER, prince made reference to drugs at an indigo show, i think on the 6th sept.
after performing love is a losing game, sending his love 2 amy w etc etc he said something like 'drugs were cool in the 80's, but not cool anymore'

so this suggests 2 me tht it's likely he dabbled back then but doesn't (so much) these days..maybe just prescription pills 4 his poorly joints.
