PRINCE VS THE TIME i know the original time had a great stage presence but Prince by himself has enough presence for an entire band! i would pick PRINCE over the time as a live band. I know prince was jealoue of the applause they had gotten on the 1999 tour. and the rest is history BOB4theFUNK

I think I know where this thread is going. ' "anything" Vs prince ' threads, no matter how good the original intention always end up somewhere near hell.

I have not seen enough music massacre's, or battle of the bands movies, such as "Graffiti Bridge," to really comment...but there is a good chance I would choose Prince when the competition was over...just so that Prince would still like me. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

Forget the intention, no matter who or what P is compared to; he wins, naturally. I would love to see how these type of threads would hold up in the non-p section. It'd be like night and day

Well, I don't know about anybody else on here, but I've actually seen The Time open up for Prince twice. Once on the Controversy tour in Santa Monica, Ca. and once on the 1999 tour in Long Beach, Ca. Both acts were completely different. The Time was more of a party band. Their set wasn't that long on either tour although they were very well received from the crowd. Especially on the 1999 tour. The fans LOVED The Time. I did too. But they didn't spoil it for Prince. U could get into The Time's set for what it was. Jams...all the way through. With Prince, he was the headliner. So he was on stage a lot longer, of course he had more material to choose from. And the pacing of the shows were different. Morris and Prince's stage personas were totally different. And the band's themselves were totally different. Nothing similar at all. The Time; Morris, Jesse, Monte, Jellybean, Jimmy and Terry were very slick, and very cool. Prince's band; Bobby, Matt, Mark, Lisa and Dez, were very rock. Both bands were killin' in their own way. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I saw The Time twice myself - same tours as you. I saw them in New Orleans both times. I can tell you that New Orleans in the early 80s was a Time town even more than it was a Prince town. I was always a Prince fan first and foremost but even I have to concede that The Time blew Prince away when I saw them on the 1999 tour at The Saenger Auditorium here in New Orleans. (Prince was better on the Controversy tour show I saw.) The crowd was in a frenzy. By the time Prince came on the crowd was exhausted. the music knows what your motives are when you are making it

I never stated that the fans out here WERE NOT into The Time. Actually, I stated just the opposite. Actually, I'm not even sure what your point was or the need for tacking your post to mine except for the fact that you're conceding that The Time blew Prince off stage. Again, I say that's nice, man. Has nothing to do with the statement I made in my post. The two shows I attended, that didn't go down. The Time didn't blow Prince off stage. At either show. Were the fans going beserk during The Time's set? Like I already stated, yes they were. Especially on the 1999 tour. Were the fans going beserk during Prince's set? Hell yeah. Even moreso than during The Time's set. On BOTH tours. Can't speak on anywhere else on the tour. Can only speak on out here in Southern Cali. The Time could have blown the drawers off of Prince's set in Virginia for all I know. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

You talking to me rusty? Are you refering to me? Cuz if you are, address me by name or be clearer on who your thing is directed at. Give u a fucking break about what? What does Parade or Signs and "they weren't all that to be different" (?) have to do with Prince vs.The Time? And what does "the guy who was lukewarm towards Signs when it came out" What's that about? Yeah, I once posted that I wasn't blown out of the water over Sign when it came out. Is that what you're refering to?. If so...what about it? And again, give u a fucking break about what? You wanted my attention? Now u got it...What are you talking about? I have seen on DVD a few Time/Prince shows from 1983 and I agree with BG that the Time were a freakin awesome party band and Prince was a deep, brilliant headliner. Both bands were awesome but one played new wave funk while the other funk rock but equally as well. Both bands were inseperable in terms of how well they did their thing. Interestingly though when I saw the Time recently in Vegas I actually thought The Time as a band are so much better now than Prince's current band. Prince live now is all about Prince (which is what we want) but The Time were a band in full flight - in fact the best band I have ever heard. What I loved most about The Time in Vegas was everything they played was exactly like the records. All the synth sounds, electronic drums, guitar parts all exactly like the records and straight outta 82/82. They even dressed exactly the same (except for Jesse's pink suite) and the schtick from Morris and Jerome was was still the same as 1982/3.They were fantastic so I would have to say that while Prince and his bands ruled the '80"s today I think The Time are a better band.
