Brass players don't take center stage.

Why doesnt prince play brass???

Want further proof of how untalented he is? Never once on any recording does he play the xylophone or the violin. Lazy git.

A seemingly irrelevant question that comes up quite often is how many instruments can Prince play, and if it’s really 27. The ‘27 instruments’ comes from the liner notes of his first album For You, where it reads: “Prince’s reign as one of modern music’s originals began at the age of seven when he began teaching himself to play piano. He quickly moved on to guitar, drums and eventually, 23 other instruments.” Those are 26 instruments, plus vocals make 27.

All instruments used on the record are also detailed (but somewhat confusing to add up, because the guitars are sometimes listed as just ‘guitars’ whereas on other tracks it says electric guitar; acoustic guitar. The listing looks more of less like this: 1) vocals; 2) Orr Bass; 3) Ms. Poly Moog; 4) syndrums; 5) Arp Pro Soloist; 6) Arp String Ensemble; 7) synthesizer bass; 8) singing bass; 9) drums; 10) clavinet; 11) Oberheim 4-voice; 12) slapsticks; 13) acoustic guitar; 14) finga cymbals; 15) wind chimes; 16) congas; 17) electric guitar; 18) water drums; 19) bongos; 20) Fender Rhodes piano; 21) Mini-moog; 22) fuzz bass; 23) Handclapsandfingasnaps; 24) orchestra bells; 25) woodblocks; 26) brush tap; 27) tree bell.

Clearly it can be argued that "Handclapsandfingasnaps" can hardly be considered an instrument, whereas the slapstick or woodblocks don’t take much study to master. And ‘singing bass’ and ‘fuzz bass’ are most likely just patches on a synthesizer. So the 27 remains a seemingly random number, since obviously some of them are very similar to the ponit that you don’t really need a different skill to play an instrument when you master a related instrument. Besides, there are also instruments not used (or listed) on For You that Prince might play that would make the number even greater.

The instruments Prince plays (besides his vocals) fall in roughly three categories:
a. Keyboard-instruments including but not limited to piano, electric piano, organ, electronic keyboards & synthesizers and the ‘key-tar’ (a smaller synthesizer that you hang from your shoulder like one would do with a guitar). The PurpleAxxe and GoldAxxe that Prince used in the early '90s could both be considered key-tars.
b. Guitar including various types of electrical, semi-electrical and acoustic guitars and bass guitars.
c. Percussion including but not limited to drums; timbals; congas, bongos, tambourine and tamborocca. If programming a drum computer would also be considered playing an instrument that would be another skill Prince masters. He used various models, with the Linn LM-1 as the most recognizable one.
