Run Prince run!!! Your fans are Fecking Fruitcakes!!!.....
if it fits...
Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

There isn't much of a secret. The lyrics are about what YOU want it to be, who cares about Prince's original idea? He already delivers the music, the voice, the words; you can do with it what you want, read into it what you want, but I alway thought it was quite simple; it seems the evaluation of a past relation that Prince is sad about and want to start again.

The missing verse is actually quite silly; he recorded the only known version of that live during a one-off show at 1st Avenue and he reworked that live song in the studio, re-recording some parts (the guitar solo, the outro with violins) and took out the part of him singing about 'I don't even think I want your love' and then goes off how he wants to go out and buy him some love.
Which was a good decision, as it took away from the power of the song and the rest of the lyrics.

that is a good reason for not listening to boots. I dont think you should listen to unreleased stuff or previous studio versions. Its like asking to see the sketches and screwed up bits of paper containing the lyrics. yeah its interesting but its not what he wanted you to hear. the final result is what matters not how he got there.

i do think its interesting how such a nonsensical - lets face it - song has become such an anthem. no-one knows its true meaning and yet everyone loves it. Personally i think its because its a memory. Id be interested to know how many new prince fans weigh this song. is it such a ballard for them too?

But on the other hand, Prince is known for recording AMAZING songs, like the original Old Friends 4 Sale and then ABSOLUTELY fucking it up by re-recording it, making it less.

As long as Prince has so many beautiful tracks gathering dust, I am glad I can at least dust off a not so good quality version of songs like In A Room With No Light or the long versions of Computer Blue.

I can't claim to know what its about but it always makes me feel so horribly sad - especially when the harmonies start - he sound just like an agnel

I never meant 2 cause u any sorrow
I never meant 2 cause u any pain
I only wanted 2 one time see u laughing
I only wanted 2 see u laughing in the purple rain

Purple rain Purple rain
Purple rain Purple rain
Purple rain Purple rain

I only wanted 2 see u bathing in the purple rain

I never wanted 2 be your weekend lover
I only wanted 2 be some kind of friend
Baby I could never steal u from another
It's such a shame our friendship had 2 end

Purple rain Purple rain
Purple rain Purple rain
Purple rain Purple rain

I only wanted 2 see u underneath the purple rain

Honey I know, I know, I know times are changing
It's time we all reach out 4 something new
That means u 2
U say u want a leader
But u can't seem 2 make up your mind
I think u better close it
And let me guide u 2 the purple rain

Purple rain Purple rain
Purple rain Purple rain

If you know what I'm singing about up here
C'mon raise your hand

Purple rain Purple rain

I only want 2 see u, only want 2 see u
In the purple rain

Dissect it if you will.

personally i think its just a song about a lover and the purple rain bit is taken from jimmy and purple references to drugs kinda stuff from the 70s.

its defo where the whole purpleness started

as for boots huey - i dont think people should be listening to studio stuff that was changed, if you hadnt heard it you may still like the released version.

not to mention its illegle as its princes.

I will always chose the original intro to Joy In Repetition over the one mixed out We Can Funk.

And this is only the 80's stuff and some 90's stuff I talk about, btw. Prince can keep his later stuff locked up for all I care, as the stuff he did release was a lot of bs anyways, mostly.

I kinda liked the last two songs on the album, the rest was mediocre middle of the road stuff I could not care less about.

The song itself is boring JB wannabe stuff. yawn

i dont see whats so different with that as songs like sexy dancer in fact any of the prince album.

people who say hes changed from then are quite wrong, i dont hear the change at all. okay there was some variation to the theme over the years but fundamentally hes the same just older.

okay sorry we are off topic.

I became fan becuz he added his own stuff to old styles and changed every year or so. His albums from 1999 to Lovesexy were so different every time, he was able to surprise me, then his music and maybe outlook on life folded in on itself.
Which is not strange; he got older. But I find it hard to listen to after so many albums of great material.

It was the wrong kind of surprise; the context was awfully cultish and freakazoid. The music was kinda okay. But sterile.

I hated it upon first listen. A new theocratic order? Oh, IS there?

I don't think so.

I have to say that Toots makes an excellent point...Re-reading history. A thread that is two years old, about a song that's at least 25 years old.

A new fan can come here at any moment and wonder about other people's views on this song. Any conversation about a classic song should be welcomed with open arms...because the song has remained beautiful...and when it comes to a song, that opens with an apology...or attempts to clarify intention...If the listener had ever felt saddened....The desire to forgive lives on after the song is over. And without that high art in the soul of every human being...The world would only be hatred and pornography, and little else. The song is Loving... cool

Yes...like buying a house...your debt/income ratio...Look at the world's hate/Love ratio...I am impatient for Love to overcome...and it will...and we will have a lot of wonderful musician's like Prince, and many of unknown human being's that are fighting for paradise with all that they have. (And I mean the ability to present...two things to discern from.) Easy Sex, and Tough Love. How the intricate weave could make a difference.

"Purple Rain," does teach that conciousness. And that is a song and a movie that in my opinion deserves continuous respect.

Deleted lyric:

"Baby I don't want your money, no no no
I don't even think I want your love
If I wanted either one I'd take me some money and buy it"

I've heard that verse in two different rehersals, and one live performance (the 1st Avenue concert where the purple rain basic tracks were used for the album.

i heard there was an additional lyric

i'm so sick of doing this song
but it seems it's the only one the world seems 2 know
don't u realize i'm more than this
i so sick of this song but alas here i go ...
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

nice viewpoint

are you sure its forgiving? Im not. Its more wistful i think and complaining - after all has been said i only wanna see you in the purple rain

"Purple Rain," can be interpreted in many ways....I believe that the simplest way to describe the emotion of the song is..."A spiritual bathing," which to me means that an understanding with love and forgiveness is washing through you. rose

Heh, to me, none of that spiritual bs. He is just pissed off the broad dumped him and he just wants to shag her again, so he can dump her. It's a song of hurt male pride.
