Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Names 2003 Inductees
Thu Nov 7, 4:40 PM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Australia's heavy-metal rockers AC/DC along with three British groups -- Elvis Costello (news) and the Attractions, The Police and The Clash -- climbed to the ranks of rock's pantheon after being named the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 2003 inductees, organizers said on Thursday.

They were joined by The Righteous Brothers, Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield, whose 1965 chart-topping hit "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" helped define what came to be called "blue-eyed soul" during that decade.

"These inductees represent many influential genres of rock, including 60s soul, heavy metal and 1970s English punk," said executive director Suzan Evans in a statement.

The Hall of Fame's 18th annual induction ceremony will be held in New York on March 10 and as in recent years, it will likely reunite bands that parted ways several years ago, sometimes acrimoniously.

The Police, The Clash and Costello followed in the footsteps of The Ramones and Talking Heads, who last year became the first punk and new wave bands to break into the Hall of Fame. Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record.

Sting, the solo artist who was bassist and lead singer for The Police, told his web site Sting.com: "I am very proud of the legacy of The Police. We were a damn good band and it still holds up."

The Police fused punk with reggae grooves and intricate arrangements to gain global popularity. With Andy Summers (news) on guitar and Stewart Copeland (news) on drums, The Police's rise culminated with the 1983 album "Synchronicity" which featured the hit song "Every Breath You Take." The trio broke up in 1985.

The anti-establishment Clash rose to prominence at the dawn of the punk era, lashing out against war, racism and the sorry state of the British economy to gain global fame with hits like "Rock the Casbah" before splitting in 1982.

Critically respected, Costello drew from the energy of punk with his first solo album "My Aim Is True" in 1977 before joining with the Attractions, made up of keyboardist Steve Nieve, bassist Bruce Thomas and drummer Pete Thomas, until the mid-1980s. Since Costello has jumped music genres from jazz to a collaboration with Burt Bacharach (news).

The hard-charging guitars of Angus and Malcom Young combined with the growl of AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson to power the band's aggressive sound with anthems such as "You Shook Me All Night Long" in 1980.

This was posted here a couple of months ago. Prince is not eligible till 2004 inductions. That would make it 25 years AFTER his first record. The Police's very first record was an EP released in 1977 that's why they are eligible. By the time they induct the inductees it has to be 25 years AFTER his first record.

"For You" was released in 1978.

1978 + 25 = 2003

In my book... that's 25 years! nod

But your book is not the way it works. Even some people thought Bruce Springsteen didn't get in in his first eligible year. They were wrong too.

Technically, Prince's 1st studio recording and professional release was with 94 East in 1975! So, since they're not considering a single artist's work in one band, but the artist himself... he should have been eligible 2 years ago.

Well for those who don't understand what Im saying: Bruce Springsteen was inducted in 1999. It was said to be his "first" year of eligibility. But his first album was released in 1973 ... so that would make it literally 26 years after his first album. But I think they want 25 years exactly to be after the artist's first album. Which would make Springsteen's eligibility in 1999 the right year.

The Police's very first album was released in 1978 but, their first record was an EP in 1977. The Hall goes by first record whether it's an album or not. Nobody else on the list of 2003 inductees had their first record released in 1978.

Those were just demo's and they weren't released in 1975... The first release from those sessions with Prince on it was in 1986...

I think it's fair enough.the Rock&Roll Hall Of Fame Made Michael Jackson Wait.MJ should have gone in as a Group Member back in 94 but had too wait until 97 with the J5.they as a Solo Artist He should have gone in 97 which was 25 years from his first Solo Album but He had too wait until 2001.so this isn't the first time somebody has gotten Jacked.Earth,Wind&Fire got in 2000.there first album was out in 1971&they should have gone in 1996.Sly&The Family Stone should have been in there in 1991 but had too wait until 1996.there 25 year Rule Applies too Whomever they want it too.when a Sly Stone,Michael Jackson,Prince,etc.. Impact Artist can't get in on there So-Called Time Period then it becomes very Suspect IMHO.

Although I hope I'm proven wrong, I think the R&R Hall of Fame is gonna punish Prince for his very public criticism of the music industry by inducting him well past his eligibility.
At least in their mind it will be a punishment. I bet the only thing Prince is looking forward to in that ceremony is the jam at the end.
Although I know I'm biased when it comes to Prince (no shit sherlock), when Prince finally does get inducted, it's gonna be one of the best jams the R&R Hall of Fame has seen in a good while. Not even a broken foot could keep Prince off that stage. smile

Don't think when he is eligible he will be inducted, many fantastic artists like Alice Cooper have yet to be inducted while average bands like the Clash, Ramones and Talking Heads are a priority.
