It would've been a really naff thing to do if it wasn't pretty well done.

Mixing tracks together like Peaches and Cream and re-recording whole parts and vocals, plus the video, really made it. cool

Well, since there is a question mark behind appreciation, I will give my two cents.

I think purple medley is some kind of turning point in the nineties for Prince. A first sign of things going downhill. In the early nineties he had good times with the NPG, hornheads, doing things like the undertaker and sacrifice of Victor. Then comes Kirky J and his production. And the weird 'new masters' vibe. When he fired the NPG, plastic production was Prince' new thing with Kirky J dead center. Rave, 1999TNM, NPS followed. Even Crystal Ball got mixed together. High and the slaugtherhouse, it was all kind of bland and easy. It wasn't until 2001 with one night alone, NEWS and the rainbow children Prince got it together again.

I'm not a fan of medleys, but in this case, I love it. I'm especially fond of "A Love Bizarre" and "Let's Work" in there--they're wonderfully redone. I love the video during those songs too; he just looks really cool during those parts.

this is what prince needs 2 do in his live shows again thus covering the past material and moving 4ward big grin
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I agree with this, but I do enjoy most of the Purple medley I must say.
I always just chalked it up to just being one of those things that only
a nutty ol prince fan would like. giggle
All of the parts mentioned are favorites of mine. Also the Peach live coda
near the end which is the riff of the song Chaos & Disorder.
The other mixes on the single, the Kirky stuff, was kind of stinky.
