I never get worked up over lists like these, but cute to see little Prince-y in at number one. I've been in a Purple Rain-era mode lately, so I'm happy it's there. The ones on the list that I love:

1. Purple Rain Prince and the Revolution (1984)
5. Madonna Madonna (1983)
12. Stankonia OutKast (2000)
14. Disintegration The Cure (1989)
22. 3 Feet High and Rising De La Soul (1989)
30. Appetite for Destruction Guns N' Roses (1987)
38. Raising Hell Run-DMC (1986)
43. Paul's Boutique Beastie Boys (1989)
51. The Score Fugees (1996)
54. Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 Janet Jackson (1989)
55. It Takes a Nation of Millions... Public Enemy (1988)
59. Ray of Light Madonna (1998)
61. Paid in Full Eric B. & Rakim (1987)
62. OK Computer Radiohead (1997)
63. The Joshua Tree U2 (1987)
66. The Chronic Dr. Dre (1992)
70. My Life Mary J. Blige (1994)
72. 1984 Van Halen (1984)
77. Dummy Portishead (1994)
85. Home Dixie Chicks (2002)

There are others on there that I like, but those are my classics.

they don't have the whole list posted yet, but they're gonna have it all available soon.

Anx, did'nt I just mention to you just last week I believe that this album was paramount to those times. I said that this album to us kids who were actually there when it was released meant to us what the Beatles "Sgt Pepper" meant to folks in 1967. Meaning that this album is a classic. Was a classic when it was released. The film certainly helped matters, didn't it? Cool, good for Prince.

Ah yes, the best album that I've ever heard getting more and more props these days. nod

I don't usually pay attention to lists because they're all meaningless at the day's end, and they all make for some kinda argument if they don't meet your standards. But EW got the #1 slot right this time. Still the best album the man has ever made after 24 years. thumbs up!

well, PR certainly flipped the script for me in 1984, at least in terms of what i listened to and what i expected from the music i bought and listened to.

Took the words damn near out my mouth.

These kids today don't have a musical 1984 to rescue them from the musical oblivion they are in right now. Back then we were overdosing on the candy pop of Michael Jackson and then here comes His Royal Badness with the jaw dropping Purple Rain. Hooked on the first listen and forever transformed into the Purple Underground.

Damn I miss the Eighties.

I agree. I was shocked that SOTT wasn't in there. At first, I thought that they only included one album from an artist; but U2 has 2 albums on the list. How the hell did Eminem make it on the list? Yes that album was good, but better than SOTT?

And why all this love for Kanye West? Anyway, I don't want to bitch too much. I will say though that PR needs to be in the top 10 list of greatest albums of all time, not just in the last 25 years.

The last time I was at the Purple Legion CD store here in Moscow [no relation with our man], a sales assistant came up to me near the Prince section, grabbed the Purple Rain album, brandished it to me and said, "Vot etot - istoristicheski" [this one is historical].

He knows his stuff:)

She may be overrated when you analyze her career but there is no doubt Education is a brilliant, affirming and beautiful album. Prince even said so!

I remember when I got that album and made sure that I didn't hear Purple Rain until the first time I saw the movie and when I did it was such a fantastic feeling because it was so awesome that it just bridged the gap between people because it was when radio was soo different and to see a Black man on MTV and being embraced by the media and really the rest of the world, it was sooo inspiring.

But it does deserve to be on that list. But when it comes right down to it people over at Entertainment weekly just picked "their" favorites.
