Old Friends For Sale Lyrics breakdown request Topic says it all I think.
Can someone take a stab at decyphering the original lyrics to Old Friends For Sale. Not just summarizing what the first verse means and so on, but actually breaking the song down line by line. First Verse: The sun set in the west this mornin' 4 I know, I know L.A. is callin' Bad news, Steve said, and people are talkin' They say your kingdom is fallin', yeah They say U lost your fire When another musician U hired Little do they know, U wouldn't have passed go Unless they could take U higher, yeah So, let's start with the first line: "The sun set in the west this mornin'" interesting, since suns set in the evening...any thoughts? Walking alone in the dark, I see nothing u see
I can be in a park, or flying in the…in the deep sea I wish u’d hold my hand; then everything could b There’s nothing strange, we’re not deranged We only want everyday 2 b a Cosmic Day

I don't know which original version you're talking about... all I could find was this:
The sun set in my heart this evenin' Cuz an old friend of mine got lost in the jive Little did she know, when U're stuck in the snow Nobody gets out alive Tears fall gently in my garden As I wait in vain 4 my sweet baby 2 call I guess what my own brother told me was true He had been with my sweet baby and she never really loved me at all Night fell so dark this evenin' The moon wasn't shinin' nowhere Sometimes that old light in the alley would light up this old heart of mine But now I'm wonderin' if there's someone up there who really cares The night fell darkest in Persia What used 2 flow blue is now flowin' black Many a doctor can try, but only heaven knows why When it comes 2 love Why do some men, why do some men turn their backs? Can't somebody please tell me? Maybe the morning air will make me feel better Oh, I hope better than I feel right now Last night a stranger took my picture and then he, uh.. He asked if I'd buy it, huh I said I guess I don't know how Old, old friends 4 sale Get'em while the gettin' is hot But U better watch out, they'll kiss U until they get what U got And they'll show U the friends that they're not Old friends 4 sale ©Controversy Music - ASCAP Please explain... I believe you quoted the revised 1991 lyrics. the lyrics i posted are from 1985 and are the original ones, apparently.
Still, is there anyone who can shed light on the lyrics of the original line for line? Boris!? Walking alone in the dark, I see nothing u see

Steve was Prince's former manager. "Bad news, Steve said, and people are talkin' They say your kingdom is fallin', yeah They say U lost your fire When another musician U hired" He was talkin' about Wendy there. The other musician hired. Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

The part about cocaine is Vanity and Morris. And the friend who sold pics was Chick Huntsberry.

"two friends of mine who got stuck in the snow"
Always thought this was about firing Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for some reason.

Whatever, the meaning, it is a song I have always loved, and how bittersweet it is to say goodbye to certain portions of friendships, although friends may still hang around in your heart. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

thank you for clearing up the Wendy connection to this song. Never quite got that one.
However, on the cocaine lyrics...what is the general consensus...is Prince talking bout Morris and Vanity, or Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis? Walking alone in the dark, I see nothing u see

2 friends of mine got stuck in the snow. i think jimmy jam and terry lewis were working on the s.o.s bands first album. they couldn't catch the plane back on the 1999 concert tour. there was a bad snow storm and prince was angry that they didn't make it back. BOB4theFUNK

I've never heard the original, but I would kill to hear it!
I heard somewhere that the line "stuck in the snow" was about Morris Day doing cocaine. Could there be truth to that?

Well, if it stopped at just getting stuck in the snow, we could take it literally to mean Jam & Lewis, but the rest of the verse makes the snow line to mean cocaine, so it's def. Morris/Vanity. IMO.

Well, if it stopped at just getting stuck in the snow, we could take it literally to mean Jam & Lewis, but the rest of the verse makes the snow line to mean cocaine, so it's def. Morris/Vanity. IMO. I think the whole stanza talks about the demise of The Time. "Two friends of mine got stuck in the snow" Is definitely a reference to Jam and Lewis as their missing the gig due to the storm ended the original Time line-up. The second verse I think is a reference to what happened with Morris: In Uptown when winter's alarmin', oh Cocaine becomes charmin' But U talk about things U don't know Morris had a coke habit and left MPLS for LA (in winter) right after filming Purple Rain. He then went on to speak negatively about Prince to the media. Three very powerful things happened to Prince that year: 1. Dez left and Wendy joined the band 2.The Time broke up 3. Chic, his most trusted bodyguard and by all accounts good friend, betrayed him. The song addresses each of these issues in that order.
