I would say that is a decent list. But I would have to move Prince up and add Bernie Taupin to the list. He is one of the greatest songwriters ever.

No Carole King or Neil Diamond? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

This list was a travesty for the low and non-existent representation of African-Americans. How can Smokey, Stevie, Curtis Mayfield be shut out of the top ten? And no James Brown on the list...please.

I would put Prince ahead of Springsteen, Neil Young, Tom Waits. Where are Gamble and Huff? Berry Gordy? I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

they say we just good at rhythm tracks not actually songwriting Maybe that's why all those other songwriters steal from so many great black muscians and songwriters. Van Morrison, Paul Simon, Rolling Stones, Beatles, etc. have been cashing black checks for years. And I thought the list was for songwriters, not poets. Rhythm, melody, verse. Smokey not in the top ten, I still can't believe it. The only reason they see fit to rank Prince is because of his guitar-based compositions (yet RS still keeps him off their guitar list-the irony). So many critics are elitist, backwards looking, narrow-minded. No wonder rock journalism is dead. Why do I get so upset at these ridiculous lists?

[Edited 6/16/08 16:50pm] I know - they should be in the top 10, more surprising is how could they possibly get to 50 and still not have Barry Gibb in there somewhere. They completely forgot John Lennon too. And how is Bruce Springstein #3?

they say we just good at rhythm tracks not actually songwriting ----- Well lately we are good at rhythm tracks and not words. Curtis, Smokey, and Stevie should be on the list and they are ahead of Prince in the songwriting department but I cannot think of anyone black that has come along in the last decade that is really a great songwriter. P maybe the last of the great songwriters, performer and musician of his generation in the black community. [Edited 6/17/08 2:26am]

Elvis Costello and Brian Wilson have absolutely no place in the top 10. To rank them above Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon is laughable. Neil Young should not be number two either. They got the number one position right but that's a no brainer. I think Prince is probably in the right position. He could probably be a few spots higher, but they're in the right ballpark. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

Are you kidding, you do know that's Brian wilson of the beach boys...pet sounds, god only knows, good vibrations, I can go on.. But anyway two of my favourite musician's in the top 10, brian wilson and Prince. But Prince should be higher, yet he is laways shunned by this stuff, was he even in rolling stone's greatest guitarists list?

Actually, you could probably only go on for a few more seconds and then you'd be struggling. Brian Wilson was a great producer and musician. He had great ears and a unique vision, but judged purely as a songwriter he is not fit to kiss the ass of 90% of the people ranked below him on that list. Most of his songs were co-written with other people anyway. That fact alone should disqualify him from a place in the Top 50 songwriters. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”
