"Your Money has turned from Green to Brown" from "Emancipation"...

I wonder was Prince thinking along the lines of the below quote, when he wrote and sung the above quote in Emancipation:

"So the real problem is not Iraq. The problem is America. The problem is that 80 percent of Americans believe that their country is on the wrong track, and 75 percent do not believe that the economic situation next summer will be better than it is now. The problem is that of General Motors. The company's value is now a fraction of Toyota's. The problem is that Chrysler is on the verge of bankruptcy, Starbucks is in trouble and the Dow Jones is in deep trouble. The problem is that the budget deficit is out of control, the national debt is irreparable and the dollar is worthless. Something about the way the Americans do things is not working. Something is not as it used to be."

It was about his relationship with WB. Remember, he had signed that HUGE record deal with them a few years earlier, then he learned that the contract wasn't what he expected. He then was ready to get out of the contract and they didn't want to do that. So he was PISSED and was willing to do anything to get out of it.

In short, the lines in the song "Emancipation" are about the WB deal. Meaning, no matter how much money it was, it wasn't worth going through what he went through.

Johnny please, huh, when I was on my knees
My back was broken and my spirit ill at ease
And now it seems just like the autumn leaves
Your money's turned from green 2 brown and now U best believe

Every angle of these money issues...are all true...I do however believe that the World is getting better...more than I believed that a year ago...because of all of the companies that are working on it....A Global condition....takes a lot of people to sort it out...If anybody's Troops, are where the ground isn't sanitized properly...There's a good chance that all they are going to bring home is disease.

"your money has turned from green to brown"

i always thought this was about the actual color of the bills.
i don't know what american dolars bills look like but i thought
perhaps large bills like say, 100 dollars would be green and a
bill like 1 dollar or something was brown.

thus it would be about earning less money, or getting less off
warners.

Exactly. Well put.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

FYI, all US paper currency is green/green-ish. Recently, they have changed the ink and it takes on a avacado green color at times, but it is still green. Here are our samples:

WellInever

I took it as money is worthless if your soul is not right. That with out the right 'light' leaves go from green to brown as does the value of ones life if their soul is not right.

He has other songs that are on this subject, but Emancipation is clearly him saying goodbye to Warner Brothers.

Ever since I was a little baby
I had 2 have double everything
When they tell me that's enough
That's when I wanna fill my cup
2 the top, Johnny, hear me sing
CHORUS:
Emancipation - free 2 do what I wanna
Emancipation - see U in the purple rain
Emancipation - free 2 do what I wanna
Emancipation - break the chain, break the chain

Ever since that Eve did unto Adam, alright
What somebody been sho'nuff doin' 2 me (Watch it!)
I've been tryin' 2 break the chain
Get my little ass out the game
I'd rather sing with a bit more harmony, oh

CHORUS

Johnny please, huh, when I was on my knees
My back was broken and my spirit ill at ease
And now it seems just like the autumn leaves
Your money's turned from green 2 brown and now U best believe

CHORUS

(Emancipation) {repeat in BG}
Break the chain, oh yeah
Well, sho'nuff
See U in the purple rain
Emancipation - free 2 do what I wanna
Break the.. break the.. break the chain!

Hey!
Alright!
Hey! {x4}

Emancipation
Free - don't think I ain't!

Emancipation
