This one is up there. I would say after the Sign's album cover. But I gotta admit that I have such a soft spot for Purple Rain. I had been defending Prince and sticking up for Prince for 4 years easy before PR hit. So I was so happy to see Prince totally turn it out, upside down, sideways and everywhere else with this album. This album (Purple Rain) to kids like me in 84 was what Sgt. Pepper meant to the kids in 67. It's a huge paramount album. No doubt about it. Prince will always be known for this album. I always dug the flowers on the boarders on the front and all of the flowers on the back. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

I really enjoyed all the art from Purple Rain to Lovesexy. Those packages seemed to be intentional statements, professionally designed and masterfully executed. After that, things got so garish and tacky. With the exception of The Rainbow Children, P's packaging after, say, 1989 has smacked of some amateur dazzled with whatever accidents he discovers with Adobe Photoshop and QuarkXPress. Agreed. Especially with Purple Rain, you can tell that everything was very purposeful, part of the whole album concept. People always say that he knew this album would make him a superstar and you can tell that he intentionally thought out everything from this time period and really made it work because he wanted it that badly. | |

Except for that silly typo on the back ...there´s this purple suspicion that lurks in the anals of my mind. Should be "annals", right ? But I agree with both of you, this really is one of is best covers, especially with the flowers and all. They really added a lot to the overall "romantic / New Romantic" flavor or theme of that particular album and period and kind of reflected the zeitgeist of the years 1983-85. Great album cover. Sometimes I seriously wonder how someone like Prince, who has released albums with such beautiful cover art as Purple Rain, Parade, Around the World in a Day, Sign O the Times and Lovesexy, could go from that class and aesthetic and style to such utter crap like the mid 90s album covers, starting with Gold and continuing with it right before the release of TRC, which was much better than its predecessors. And it´s not just about using the same fotographer again because even though Jeff Katz and others made brief reappearances in the 90s, the cover art itself sucked big time. Steve Parke´s own art is kind of ok but his work for Prince was crap. [Edited 6/13/08 6:07am] " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! Probably the Prince album cover.
This has been the only time I've seen a cover without hearing a note from the album and just had to have it. I have his clip from American Bandstand and when Dick Clark held the album up, I was like, "Hot Damn! Gotta get that!" The cover is extremely simple. His name and his face. He's not trying too hard. It's just an easy, beautiful shot. Could have gone in a modeling porfolio if the music thing hadn't played out. I love a Man who:
