I Would Die 4 U - 30 minute version

'morning everyone.

Is that true? Does this version really exist?

I've also heard that Prince edited other songs such as 'Computer Blue' (originally running to 9 mins) and 'Purple Rain' (18 mins).

Can U imagine the 'Purple Rain' album with those timings?

Yes, it exists.

The full-length Computer Blue runs approximately 14 minutes.

And there are live renditions of Purple Rain that run in excess of 20 minutes (including a performance from the Rosemont in 1984).
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Really? Is the Purple Rain long version complete with an instrumental intro, such as on the Syracuse video?

It does exist, I´ve seen it on some expensive bootleg at a record fare but I haven´t heard it yet. I quite like the 12" maxi version so I wonder what else he added to that.I can never get enough of all those long and stretched versions of his 80s songs . He should release a rehearsal album one day with those long versions.

YEP! Def a 30 minute version of I would die for you. It even had an official release!

There are also extended/alternate versions of Take me with U, The beautiful ones and Darling Nikki.

There are about 5/6 different versions of Computer Blue Ranging between 7 and 14 minutes.

Can you imagine a 25th double disc anniversary editon of the album including all of these, as well as all the b'sides and popular boots from then - Possessed - Moonbeam Levels - Electric Intercourse - to name a few, to be released next year?

Amazing! cool razz cool

Uhm, I must admit, that it might be on a rare promo or something. Ayedunno; I do not own everything he ever did.

But I know the 30 minute version exists on a boot. So that made me conclude it wasn't official.

Love it!

I will definitely check though.

To me it sounds more like a soundboard recording from either a rehearsal or an actual concert. Not too sure if it really is a *studio* outtake..

Everyone, THANKS for the info. These 'Work' Volumes some of u own, are these the ultimate sources of unreleased Prince material? Do these volumes contain everything that was locked up in the vault in Paisley Park?

This is a fun track for a listen or two, but it does sound like more of a rehearsal than anything else.

Now the extended versions of Computer Blue...

That's beacause it's not a studio outtake nor a concert. But it can be found on The Work Volume 1 CD3 cuz I have it. It runs 30:41. It's there along side Possesed(Vocal), Wet Dream Cousin, Climax, Electric Intercourse and others.

the edited version that became the 12" single is much better, the 30 minute version just goes on and on and doesn't add anything to the song.

At some point, the 30 minute version turns into another released song. I have not listened 2 that in quite a while so I've forgotten which song it turns into.

Not mistaken that jam with the jam with Feline/Erotic City etc? The long I Would Die 4 U is just a long jam. Or it must contain an instrumental song I never heard of.

Oh, towards the end. You can clearly hear portions of Strange Relationship.

I love 'Billy'. I listen to it all the time. But I never pick up on 'Strange Relationship' coming in.

I seem to remember that it is a soundcheck performance and not a live studio outtake. It was recorded specifically for release, but was edited down. I have to check my notes to verify this, but that sounds correct to me.
The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/
