Wikipedia says:

Before Prince formed The Time, he considered using his backing band as a side-project called The Rebels. The 1979 project was a group effort, with songs being written and sung by the various members. Andre Cymone and Dez Dickerson each contributed material and a few numbers were sung by Gayle Chapman. The project was eventually shelved but two of the songs composed by Prince were re-recorded and released much later: "If I Love U 2 Night" by Mica Paris (and later by Prince's wife-to-be Mayte Garcia) and "U" by Paula Abdul. The original Prince guide vocal for "If I Love U 2 Nite" appeared by mistake on the rare Mica Paris 'Stand For Love' EP, of which only a handful exist.

All of the following tracks are circulating on bootlegs from The Rebels project. The quality isn't great though.

You (2:58) Lead vocals by Gayle Chapman. Very different from the version of the song Prince gave to Paula Abdul, which was released as "U" on her Spellbound album in 1991.

Too Long (4:19) Unreleased. Lead vocals by Dez Dickerson.

Hard To Get (3:46) Unreleased. Lead vocals by André Cymone.

Thrill You Or Kill You (6:14) Unreleased. Lead vocals by André Cymone.

Disco Away (4:40) Unreleased. Lead vocals by Dez Dickerson.

Instrumental [#1] (1:12) Unreleased.
Instrumental [#2] (1:08) Unreleased.

If I Love You Tonight [#1] (4:46) Lead vocals by Gayle Chapman. Very different from the version of the song Prince gave to Mica Paris, and was released on her Contribution album in 1991. Mayte also released a version of the song on her 1995 Child Of The Sun album.

Turn Me On (2:06) Unreleased. Lead vocals by Gayle Chapman.

The quality in the The Rebels I have is near perfect if not perfect.
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

I've always been so curious about this project! I only have "You" and "Hard to Get" and have been very intrigued by the sound because they have such a neat classic rock feel. I hope that one day I can hear the rest... confused

"The Rebels" were Prince, Dez Dickerson, Andre Cymone, Gayle Chapman, Matt Fink & Bobby Z. All the tracks were recorded over 11 days at Mountain Ears Sound Studios, Boulder Colorado in July 1979. The sessions happened inbetween the "Prince" and "Dirty Mind" albums (shortly before the "Prince" album had actually been released).

"The Rebels" sessions were definitely a precursor to the more 'new wave' sound of Dirty Mind, though The Rebels tracks are a bit more guitar orientated and straightforward. Several of The Rebels tracks were written by other band members, but the project was never completed or sequenced. The tracks recorded were (with writing credits)...

Disco Away (4:30) (Dez Dickerson)
Hard To Get (3:36) (Prince)
If I Love You Tonight (4:39) (Prince)
Instrumental 1 (1:05) (Dez Dickerson)
Instrumental 2 (1:00) (Andre Cymone)
The Loser (1:59) (Prince)
Thrill You Or Kill You (6:06) (Andre Cymone)
Too Long (4:11) (Dez Dickerson)
You (2:49) (Prince)

Prince re-worked three of his tracks later on...

"Hard To Get" was later re-recorded in 1980 as a synth-led stripped down number which was more like a precursor to tracks like "Annie Christian" and "Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)".

"If I Love You Tonight" was re-recorded in 1987 as "If I Love U 2 Nite" and later given to Mica Paris who released her version on her album "Contribution" in 1991. It was re-recorded again in 1993 as "If Eye Love U 2night" and later released on Mayte's album "Child Of The Sun" in 1995.

"You" was re-recorded much later as "U" and released by Paula Abdul on her 'Spellbound' album in 1991.
