Has prince still got a great album left in him?

Has prince still got a great album left in him or has the well run dry?

I personally think he has but only if he works with new people and stops surrounding himself with professional arse lickers to scared to voice their own opinions.

I think he has it in him. I just wish he would get a good concept for an album and stick with it throughout (RC, 1999, SOTT, etc.). To me, its like the last few albums have been pretty hit-or-miss....especially PE. PE's tracks weren't bad, but the album sounds all over the place.

I thought Planet Earth was a quality album. I may be in the minority there, though.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Well you say that but the last decade hasnt promised much has it. Maybe now hes turned 50 and entered this new decade of his life he will release the album that makes the general public remember how brilliant he can be but I wont be holding my breath! Its funny Ive heard prince fans say that prince isnt bothered about chart positions or what people think, bollocks, he would love a hit single just the same as anyone else!!!

i really liked musicology of his latest.

i think if he really concentrated on it he could top charts again.

some of his songs on recent albums just feel like fillers.

It might sound rude:

But i think some personal problems in his life, combined with his 'enlightement' that the Jehovah Witnesses are some smallminded, dogmatic and creepy form of religion, might help him to realise he is:
- rather lonely;
- admired, but not loved by his fans;
- a stubborn fellow, often making the wrong choices in life.

That kind of insights, some exsistential crisis, could help him to get in touch with his real self, and will hopefully lead to a new classic album (I think he still has got it in him, thats why i keep visiting the org.. biggrin )

if he stays away from any parts of the revolution, gets the npg back from the gold experience, put away that linn drum machine, picks up that bass and slaps the hell out of it...and makes an apology 4 making planet crap, yeah he still has it in him
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

hmmmm it always makes me giggle threads like this as great is based a point of view(diffrent strokes 4 diffrent folks) and people will always winge about whatever albums he brings us in the future i personally feel that he still does great music and great albums(3121 definitley up there with the greats imo). I dont know wever its 2 do with him not making any real "new sounds" but i suppose now cuz theres so many other artists out there its 2 hard 2 find "new sounds" that aint already been done, hes already done so many influential things with music and personally i think hes done quite enough already enough infact 2 cover 5 lifetimes and lets not forget were quite lucky 2 have an artists thats covered so much ground and released 30+ albums compared 2 jackos 7 or 8 watever the fuck it is neutral So heres my answer - Im quite happy with the way things are and have beem throughout his career cuz even if he did make what you would call "Great Album" you would still get people 10 years from now makin the exact same thread every year lol - peace wink

I just hope he returns to personal and introspective songwriting. I don't want more grand world causes. I want "If I Was Your Girlfriend". I know he can do it. He has taken some interesting musical routes over the last ten years but his lyrical songwriting has gotten so simplistic. It's as if he is denying the fact that he is aging or he just doesn't want to explore or go deep anymore. A complex, interesting and challenging woman in his life would do him wonders!

I don't beleive that there are no new sounds... there are an infinite number of new sounds to come in music...It will always evolve and I see no reason that P can't be a part of that.

i didnt say there were no new sounds, i said its harder now cuz theres much more artists than there was in the 80's all after the same thing! anyway hes already made plenty of "new sound" and proved very influential, yes i cant see why P cant be apart of it either...but i cant see him trying hard cuz hes a musical genuis and has nothing else to prove wink

Excellent post! thumbs up!

Some of the greatest albums of all time have been introspective, warts an all, searching journeys of self discovery and honesty. It would be outstanding to see him create that one truly focused, honest, introspective masterpiece I always thought he was building up to.

Unquestionably he has the talent and ability, but as time has gone by I believe he no longer has, quite frankly, the balls to lay himself bare and push the ego aside long enough to create that masterpiece. I'd love to be wrong here, but unfortunately the chances of that these days are about as great as the chances of a true focused guitar rock album...

There was a time I thought these things were possible, but not theses days. He's still capable of good music, but the focus and honesty a true classic would require are a thing of the past.

After all, we are now in the era of the Hef Years playboy

fair enough.. plus it would suck to have to make music this way... forever trying to do something different and new instead of just something that you liked doing

Not many pop/rock artists are able to follow their early seminal works when they were young,
Some of the greatest of all time, that had long successful careers past their prime, were coasting along on their earlier work and the public’s good will, but certainly had their creativity extinguished by the time they were in their early 30's
Some of my personal favorites, for example……

I love 70's Stevie wonder, but nothing much after

I love 60's/70's James Brown. But not much after

I love Paul McCartney but no much since the late 70's

I love early 80's MJ but nothing much after

I love early 60's-early 80's rolling stones, but not much after

I love 80's Prince, but not much after.

There are some exceptions, of artist’s that still make quality music, “as good” now in their older years, as when they were young.
Sting, U2, Bruce Springsteen, the Chili Peppers, Aerosmith, Radiohead, Bjork, but Prince is certainly not one of them,...a greater performer than all of them combined, but his music of the past 20 years is a pale and cheesy version of is younger self.
