Prince and his GUITAR

I want 2 pose a question 2 many of u here. I read on so many threads that Prince doesn't play his guitar songs like he used to. Or I hear that he is not writing songs for the guitar. Or I hear "why is the guitar mixed so low on the recorded versions?". Or I hear "Fury" sucks on the cd, but rocked when he played it on SNL.

My question to you guys is...What is the infatuation with his guitar music? I guess a good follow up question would be....Why not pose the same question about Prince and his piano, keyboard, drums, etc. (come on, he hasn't played a good keyboard solo in a while).

well, prince happens to be an exceptional guitarist who has a unique sound. when we listen to his albums, why wouldn't we want to hear him do something he's so well known and celebrated for?

I can relate to that, but I would love to hear more keyboard solos (ie: WDC, Soft and Wet, etc.). I love his guitar work and love the guitar driven songs. I just get tired of the complaint that he doesn't jam on guitar like he did in the 80s when I don't see that as being a true statement.

i don't know that it's a true statement either, or at least not true enough for me to take issue with. N*E*W*S, xpectation, C-NOTE, one nite alone and the truth are all what i would consider to be instrument-driven albums - not to mention the madhouse projects, which has prince's playing all over them.

i do think that his recent pop/top-40 efforts have been very tame in the instrumental chops department, but i guess that's what he believes he has to do to make a hit. shrug

i'm waiting for his next stopgap instrumental album. they might not be his best releases ever, but they're way more interesting than his last couple of pop albums.

Oh idk, i guess it's because many of the people you're referring to are actually guitar players....some who even picked up the guitar because of prince. You have to remember a lot of these ppl making guitar threads are guitarists who not only enjoy his solo's, but analyze them, take special listening to what's going on, where as non-musician fans just think it sounds cool.

I guess a good follow up question would be....Why not pose the same question about Prince and his piano, keyboard, drums, etc. (come on, he hasn't played a good keyboard solo in a while).

Hmmm maybe because prince's solos on those instruments don't move a guitar player as much as well...a guitar solo. Although, you do have those other ppl who are like prince that play multi-instruments and love a good keyboard solo as much as a guitar solo etc.
chill..prince doesnt like men being front row, makes it hard to sing the ballads

Prince can hit a certain note on that guitar that will make the hairs all over my body stand on end. I've never felt that way about any other gutarist in my life, He is so talented on the piano, but give me Prince on guitar everytime. I think he had to get better to compensate for not dancing and jumping all over the stage like he use to biggrin

eye luv both guitar & piano. it's mesmerizing & fascinating 2 watch him get "lost" in a song while playing. i remember just staring at how he played the guitar on 1 song at an afterset in London. I wasn't staring at him (can't blieve I'm saying that), I was actually watching how he played that guitar. it was beautiful.

nod

When I saw him in concert I really wasn't watching that, but on the Coachella
performance vid, I was mesmerised with how he was so lost in the song, as you put it, now I wish I was paying more attention to him at the concert.
Maybe next time.

When a musician becomes emotionally engrossed while playing, I just know they are
FEELING the music. And as Prince says, he IS music.
