oh and the ballads are excruciating.

GCS's ballads were always heavily cheese-ridden.

How does it compare to their 70s albums? I love Mirror and Ain't No Bout-A-Doubt It.

The Jam is my jam!

Very good CD, for its time, and I might play it again..

Prince had dreams of fighting The System of music industry then, and relying on their celebrity status (Graham and Chaka) and tour to sell the record. Problem: The System/Industry strikes back.. (especially a certain Music Video Conglomerate who began by preaching against what they seem to represent now..)

It's funny now. Many 80's, 70's, and 90's acts seem to be going through the same things Prince did then. They are relying on tours, and less promotion--besides being squeezed by The Industry's Marketplace for being "old school". Rockers, R&B, Rappers..It's all the same. Some are even giving away their CDs. They receive much less criticism though..

What I did think was bizarre was the album he produced for his wife, Child of the Sun.

It was rubbish. No wonder she left him.

At least half of it was really good though...Ain´t No Place Like U reminded me a bit of the song he wrote for Sheena Easton ( 101 ) , If I Love U 2nite finally got an official release, However Much U Want sounded very positive, energetic and uplifting, and there were also one or two other decent songs on it.
But I agree that the album as a whole wasn´t that great and I rarely put it in my player again.

I like this album alot lol Prince did a superb job with the production.Chaka gets funkier here than she has in years. It's better than Prince's own 'New Power Soul',although that's not saying much, lol.

Favorite songs: title track and "Drama" music

Are we talking about sales or if we liked it?

Sales: He did a terrible job
US: He did a great job

It still went gold despite not having hardly any promotion. And she probably got more of that money than she would have with her previous situation with WB.
Change it one more time..

The most ironic thing is that Prince said while promoting this album that Chaka never got the treatment she deserved and the producers of her other albums buried her voice under synths and loops

But Come 2 my House has lots of programmed drums and Kirky J production (argh).

I had to buy this cd twice because the first one was all kinds of scratched up and loved every second of it. And still played today when the mood hits me and I am in the ride.

First off, there are some songs I enjoy: Betcha I, Never B Another Fool, Hair.

Secondly, Chaka co-wrote the songs and had final say on the project.

In an interview, at its release, she said she was more nervous than usual because she did have final word.

If she didn't like a musical part or wanted horns or whatever, it would be changed.

Perhaps Prince did give it too much '80's production but in the end how much is his fault and how much is Chaka's?

And, yes people, Chaka did just win a Grammy for best R&B album (for Funk This) so you tell me whether she still matters or not.

Are we talking about how much money he received or how well the album did in sales or if folks liked it ... 3 different things.

Sales: GOLD is not good unless your just starting out (espically for Prince and the record companies). Like someone said "That's warm not hot."

Did we like it: Most folks didn't. Chaka can get with the right producer right now and have a hit...like Aretha did a few years back with A Rose" that L. hill produced. If it's hot, it doesn't matter how old they are. If Price stepped out of box and maybe let someone produce (even 1 song) I think he would have a crazy hit.

Money: Yeah most of his deals since WB have made a lot of money because he takes most of the cut. He also does 99% of the work. Before Prince could release 1 or 2 videos and that was it....no interviews...nothing....WB would have to do everything else.

So it all depends what folks are talking about.....

I actually take back everything I said about this album.

Well, almost everything. Democrazy is still an embarassment, but other than that, I now love it.

Hands up - I judged it too soon. Chaka's vocals on Never B Another Fool are out of this world! This song is the shit! If Mad Sex and Slave had a child, this is what it'd sound like.
