I like this song. But then again, I am a hard-core animal lover, so I could be a bit biased. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

This song is just...embarrassing. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I'm a big ol' carnivore who loves this song.
I love the weird guitar sounds, Rhonda Smith's wonderful fretless playing, the Hendrix-style chords (that's right... copying him again), and the super-cheesy lyrics make this a keeper.

There is the one part of the song that is kinda weird, the part where Prince sings, "sha sha sha sha". But the one part of the guitar playing has always kind of reminded me a bit of Stevie Wonder. I still love this song, and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I quite like it.
Apparently the line "I saw a friend of mine today,in an Ad saying what would do my body right" is aout a Milk commercial Spike Lee was in... Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

Every time I hear Animal Kingdom, I want to eat a steak - purely out of spite. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Animal Kingdom makes me want to take a trip to Burger King and get a Double Whopper w/Cheese. I used to hate this song with a vengenance but truth be told, it's an interesting song and one of his memorable songs off of The Truth. His voice on the song cracks me up. While I'm not going to stop being the T-Rex that I am with meat and poultry, I can respect his point in the song and the music fits with the lyrics. I can agree with P on one thing, I'm not down with fish, so I will leave the fish in the sea [Edited 5/28/08 9:35am] I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

after all the talk about this song prior 2 its release, i couldn't wait 2 hear it ..then i heard it i never thought prince could make this an embarassing effort on a song ..until i heard the planet earth album ..so i wrong man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

The instrumentation and melody are on point so you can only assume it's the confrontational element of the lyrics that causes so much upset.

Is that it? I have always wondered why this song is so disliked. So all you animal kingdom haters is it the lyrics that u hate so much? I really don't get why people should be offended that Prince gives his personal view on killing/eating animals. It seems to me people react to this song as if they have a guilty conscience by denouncing the song so veitmetly (sp). I eat animals and animal products daily but that doesn't effect how I view the song at all. It just brings up an issue most us rather not deal with. In all honesty none of us really need to eat animals to live. We do it because we like how they taste. So in essense it really is about us fulfilling a selfish desire at the cost of these animals lives. It is what it is. People just don't like be called out on the truth though. Remember the album was called the Truth and the truth hurts evidently.

I don't think it's really that people are offended or guilt-tripped by Prince giving his view, but that the lyrics are cringe-worthy. If one looks beyond them it's a good song. There's some lovely wavy synth at the beginning, the vocal effects are well, interesting. But the lyrics are awful - it's not the message within them, it's the way they're written. Or maybe it's the chirping. Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP.

Or maybe it's the chirping. So u are saying that the lyrics are worse then the average Prince lyric? Unless they are several grades below the average Prince lyric that doesn't explain the very vocal hate this song gets. Can u enumerate what's so bad about the lyrics with specifics? I have never found myself cringing when listening to the song, but then I'm not one of those Prince fans that are continuely "embarrassed", "cringing" over the music. The closest I've come is the "stuff is not brown tonight" in I think "Baby Knows" lol.
