i miss the days when prince's arrangements were so multilayered

the entire 1999 album was multilayered 2 the max! during the first verse of AUTOMATIC, u can here where the arrangement will take u 2 much later on. the same goes for d.m.s.r as well. lady cab driver takes so many twists and turns that it's pure genious! maybe i'm amking a big deal about it. neutral

I like the multilayered stuff too but I also dig his more simplistic, raw material, things like rehearsals or live stuff that doesn´t sound too sterile or overpolished. The multilayered , perfectionistic sound was very cool up until the late 80s, maybe until Lovesexy. From then on, his sound got less organic, in a sense.
Diamonds and Pearls had a nice sound to it even though it was probably also very multilayered. Thing is, in the 80s, you would get both...multilayered perfectionism and experimenting but also stuff like the Dirty Mind album or some of the songs off of Sign o the Times, like Dorothy Parker or If I Was Your Girlfriend or Forever In My Life ( now THAT has some very interesting yet simple multilayered vocal tracks).
A lot of his 90s output sounds much more powerful live compared to the studio versions.
After reading an Eric Leeds interview years ago where he said that Lovesexy sounded much better without all the multilayers, I wonder what the "raw" Lovesexy sounded like. It is great as it is and in the end, it is always the artist who has the final say, it is part of his vision add more paint to a painting or to add more sounds to a song but still, I sometimes prefer the rawer sound over the overpolished sound. One good example is that version of When You Were Mine from Aug.3, 1983 @ First Ave. Absolutely mindblowing and incredibly rough and raw, and IMO the best version ever.

yeah i luv it when his vocals are multi layerd also like...erm....Adore,Friend,Lover,Sister,Mother/Wife etc very shexy indeed especially on Friend,Lover,Sister,Mother/Wife cuz they truely reinforce his feelings and make it more powerfull kinda like a mouse with a pitbull behind him
