Would any other artist be able to pull off "Joint 2 Joint" Every once in a while I go back and listen to a Prince song or a Prince album and it reminds me of why I like him in the first place.
I was listening to CD 2 of Emancipation on the way to work and "Joint 2 Joint" came on. And damn if I didn't forget just how weird that song is. The song is tight and all over the place at once. It's kind of like a three ring circus. Here's a mad man playing an organ in ring 1. Wait, there's a double entendre filled rap by a female rapper in ring 3? And what the hell was that, a tap dance solo in the center ring? It's got the Prince bass voice, the Prince falsetto, several switches in tempo, Prince eating Captain Crunch (with soy milk) somewhere in the mix. You're singing along, pretty much having to relent to the song, and then damn if P. doesn't up and leave and, like, catch a cab at the end, talking all the while to some girl on what was, no doubt in 1996, a big ass cell phone like we all had. Completely weird and completely wonderful. I ask you, what other artist even tries to pull off stuff like this, much less suceed more often times then not? All good things they say never last...

Is it just me or does what he say during his phonecall after this cut, especially the way he says what he says, make it sound like something is "not quite right" with this fella? It sounds like what he is trying to communicate is, in fact, genuine for him which I find the most bizarre thing about it.

Nine times out of ten, I don't truly listen to this interlude, it just plays in the background. But when I stopped myself the other day...and actually listened...I was like, "What is this?!"

I think it just fits in with the weirdness of what precedes it...but then again Prince could have just inserted it so that the song would run a certain length, ensuring the side would be exactly 60 minutes along with the other two sides of Emancipation. For some reason the phone call works in context somehow. All good things they say never last...

I would like to hear d'angelo give it a go, he could put a real funked up stripped down vibe to something like this. I might have a listen as i've not had emancipation on for a while.
