prince's sign o' the times should've been a huge sucess

PRINCE should've never released if i was your girlfriend as the second single. icnttpoym should've been released as the first choice. a u.s. tour never happened which killed that albums momentum. it should've sold 5millon copies but his ego never let that happen. oh well!

This album is regarded by many as his best. I think that's a pretty big success in itself.

My fave 80's P joint (next to "Dirty Mind"). By the time this came out, most of the "1999/Purple Rain" bandwagoners were gone. It was cool having P back to myself. By the time I fully wore this LP out,"Lovesexy" was just around the corner.

I miss those days when P would put out a good joint year after year.

lol

maybe not,Prince does things his way though.
Ive seen countless threads about what he should have or shouldnt have released as a single.
The OP has a fair point.IMO
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

I thought the song 'Sign O The Times' was the first single.
He didn't release Adore as a single either but it still got major air play. It didn't matter what he released or didn't release as singles from this album, it was a huge success; and like others have pointed out to you it was his best album of all time.

falloff Sounds like a typical burned out 1980's Prince fan to me. lol lol lol

Even with that, rusty1, for once, is thinking the same way I've thought with SOTT. It should have been just as big as Purple Rain. He should have released Housequake, Strange Relationship, The Ballad of Dorothy Parker, Hot Thing and Adore. He also should have given himself a break in 1988 to let SOTT grow the way he did with 1999 in 1983. But after reading Possesed recently, I understand why he did what he did. I just wish he would have just accepted thing for where they were and allowed SOTT to be gigantic.

I'm not sure why "rusty1" is being bashed 4 this.

It is a valid topic, and a very important part of Prince's experience.

I don't know why he didn't include the U.S. on that tour.

As far as singles go, well... there R many jams on that album that could've been a hit, and yes, "I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man" is one of them.

Also, the 'Sign O' The Times' album should've gotten the album of the year award instead of U2's 'The Joshua Tree'. It has always amazed me that U2 didn't just fade out like similar '80s groups with that sound. I never thought they "deserved" the "icon status" they ended up getting.

I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man was a hit. It hit the Top 10 at went to #10, I believe in early 1988.

I agree with Rusty about this, i remember thinking the same thing back in 87, especially when he didnt even bother making a video for it, although he did learn a lesson and shot great videos for U gotthe look and ICNTTPOYM, which generated interest in the album again, particularily in America.

As for the U2 thing,I was growing up in Ireland, and at school, it was the manĀ“s thing to support U2. Although U2 are one of my fav bands now, back then I thought they were completely overrated and had many an arguement about SOTT versus The Joshua Tree. I think due to Princes negative image in America at the time, there was not much chance of he deservedly winning the album of the year award. As he infamously quoted after, I can do The Cross, but U2 cant do the Housequake.

Yrs later when Prince played his first after show in Ireland in 95, Bono joined him on stage, and they did The Cross. cool

i even have to admit that the joshua tree was a better album than sign. where the streets have no name, i still haven't found what i'm looking for, with or without u, and bullet the blue sky. there album was much deeper lyrically and spiritually than his album.

It was achtung baby which got me into U2, and one could also say that U2 have been influenced by prince in which direction and image they went with. They also understand the power of live performance, and this is basically where prince has been the last decade.

Achtung Baby, All that You Can't Leave Behind, and Unforgettable Fire are my favorite U2 albums, then the Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum.

That being said SOTT was a much better album than Joshua Tree. Nothing groundbreaking on Joshua Tree.

Yes it should have been a huge hit, and Prince may be partly to blame for not touring it in the states.

And U2's the Joshua Tree in incredible too, "one" is one of my all time favorite songs from anybody. Not to mention i used to go hiking in Josua Tree alot.

NOONE KNOWS WHAT PRINCE WAS GOING THROUGH PERSONALLY TO GIVE UP ON SOTT. U CAN'T ARGUE WITH FAITH. SOTT WAS SUCCESSFUL IT HAD THREE TOP TEN HITS. SOTT,U GOT THE LOOK, & ICNTTPOYM. PLUS THE CLASSIC ALBUM CUT "ADORE" WHICH STILL GETS PLAYED ON THE RADIO TODAY...JOHN F KENNEDY JR. PLAYED "FOREVER IN MY LIFE" AT HIS WEDDING. PLUS U CAN ACTUALLY SAY THERE WERE MORE SINGLES. IF U COUNT THE HOUSEQUAKE REMIXES
eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince
