does prince have influence on modern music?

So i've been having a long running bitter debate with a narrow minded friend of mine who believes that Prince is gay and has no influence on music. He listens to alot of rap and I was wondering if anyone had any points I could use to convince him that Prince has influence on the music he listens to. Thanks!

He obviously prefers his own willful ignorance but there are rap songs that use Prince samples. I can't name them but back to this friend. I think you need use this as an excuse to bail out on the friendship. Don't think he's going to broaden his mind because you think informing him will help. It won't.

When I first heard that song DONTCHA WISH YOUR GIRLFRIEND WAS FAT LIKE ME, I thought Prince was behind it, definately influenced by Prince. Also, just listen to Madonna/Timberlake/Timerland and BEyonce, definately influenced by Prince.

But who cares, influence is only one part of music, Prince is heavily influenced by hendrix, james brown, stevie wonder, etc and he has overshadowed their careers and developed his own style in the process.

Pop music? No, probably not. I think the vast majority are still unsure if he's still alive let alone performing.

Modern music? What genre? Don't think he's too big in the country scene.

He had a period of influence as an artist that reached a zenith and then disappeared. He is currently in a period of influence as a douchebag that hopefully nobody emulates.

No more than you, I guess. But you are wasting time replying to my post with your insignificance. Do yourself a favor & watch it with the personal attacks.

I think you need to keep your friend, it keeps you on your toes to reconsider princes music, not all of its good.

Prince has had a huge impact on modern music, I think hes highly respected in the music industry and many young singers would list him as an influence as theyve grown up with his music but also from the production side etc

as for country, prince has covered this genre as well.

just dont let your mate listen to any 'prince rap' that will definitely confirm his opinion!

Yep..I agree A fool!..but.....
Oh definetly do that. ^^^^ show him that snoop dogg 'sexual seduction' video http://www.youtube.com/wa...Kz-RXSeIYA and then play him the 'when doves cry' video http://www.mtv.com/overdr...1&vid=9700
I provided you video links to both.
look up ?uestlove and show him...as anxiety said.
I betcha he's listening to "the Dream' as well. Pull up those videos like 'Purple Kisses' .. 'Fast Car' ... 'Falsetto' and show him songs like 'Little Red Corvette' and how Prince had influenced his sound and style.

Show him examples of how Prince is so many genres wrapped into one artist. and create his own. I mean there's not 2 many artists out there today that have it all in one package.

Dare him 2 actually listen 2 his songs without looking at him.
Do some research..I know you can find rap artist and other artists that give Prince credit. try getting the artists that he listens too.
so much more..but if any thing maybe he could end up uttering that he can't doubt Prince is a grand artist. just maybe..
peace

Snoop Dogg? Come on! If Weird Al finally puts out a Prince-like video, does that merit mention, too?

Chances are, most rap artists would only be inspired by Prince in terms of presentation - glam, show, little substance & newness - like the visual equivalent of the prince album.

My point with snoop dogg as anxeity said too but i can't speak 4 anxeity is that the simuality between the videos. You can not deny that snoop was definetly influenced by Prince.
If Werid Al puts out a video what do you get from it? What does his videos say 2 you?

My point being with 'rap' artists is that maybe trying to tie together artist her friend listens to and Prince.
I can see what you mean, but this person is trying to open someones mind that seems 2 hard 2 be open so maybe start with smaller concepts.

You're way off.

Prince's recent music may not be as relevant in today’s music but there is absolutely no denying that his music catalogue has influenced just about every genre of modern music in one way or another - especially pop music.

I also think you're way off on pop artists not being aware of Prince and his body of work.

Either your friend is just trying to get a rise out of you, or he is truly mentally retarded all the WAY. Seriously. If he listens to rap, he should check out Tupac's album "All Eyez on Me", where there is a track that uses a sample from the end of Darling Nikki.

Why does anyone come here? To express their opinion on the guy. I love so much of his earlier work, but with the exception of his ongoing appeal as a live performer, nearly every other aspect of the man in the last decade has left a sour taste in my mouth. I should feel as free to comment from that perspective as anyone delusional enough to think the man can do no wrong.

Oh, & his lawyers threatened me once. Screw him. smile
