Is "cussing" necessary? Just digging on "The Undertaker" and it takes me back to the first time I saw this on disc at the NPG store in Minneapolis.
Boy, I loved Prince's "slave" days. He was at his angriest, and maybe, best. And damn, did he get nasty - - and swear. Now today I still love a good song if swearing isn't necessary. But, I don't particularly enjoy the coy approach; of suggesting a "cuss" word is coming in a song, but then back out of it with a "safe" phrase. He does that in concert also. Personally, I think any song that doesn't require swearing is all good. But, better just to "curse" than suggest cursing, and thereby drawing possibly even more attention to the word people are expecting. Y'all???

Cussing itself doesn't make a song great. Just look at the shit hop songs that are full of cussing and they aren't shit. However, it ain't the cussing that makes their songs sound like shit, it's the fact that they are slow as hell and don't have any instruments on them. There's nothing to make the ass shake.
There are plenty of good songs that don't have any cussing in them. However, cussing in a good song, definately makes it sound better. The nastier the better but it has to be over some funk, not some damn slow ass shit hop. Andy is a four letter word.

If there is no substance in the song but cussing then yh its unnecessary; but if it builds up with the attitude of the song then i wanna hear it..gives it more feeling JUST my opinion. Prince is talented and his music has substance so he never had to rely on swearing the songs were still hot regardless. And ask for hip hop to me HIP POP artists like 50 cent swear for no purpose probably just to create an image to sell a record but when 2pac would swear on a track it wasnt forced just sounded like he said it naturally.

i think it all has to do with the context and the intent. i think it's obvious when a songwriter tries to throw in a bunch of curse words in a vain attempt to sound "edgier" or angrier, because most of the time the end result sounds awkward and forced. but if a profanity is being used for a reason - to wake the listener up or to channel some kind of raw emotion...well, that's a little bit like art, isn't it?

I fear for you if that is actually one of your moral considerations I think it adds to the song Have you ever considered that other artists cuss on their tracks too?? such as eminem, 50cent or others? When prince has cussed - it's always added emphasis and never been superfluous. When he stopped cussing, his silly "hints" at cussing became cheesy and lame, detracting from what otherwise could've been great songs.

It's not good or bad in and of itself, only within the context of the song. It's definitely not necessary.
People constantly overlook that some of Prince's most popular albums (Purple Rain & Diamonds & Pearls) don't really have cussing on them. My Legacy

To be very honest, I didn't even read what you had written when I posted what I said, I just clicked "reply to quote" on the very last post (which happend to be yours) so that I could make my own independent comment. If you notice, it in no way responds to what you said at all, the only rational way you could take it as offense is if you read "you sound like" to be directed at you -- and that's a stretch, but to clear it up, I meant someone who says "shake your pants" sounds like a midwestern housewife." I didn't even read whatever it is you wrote, and it certainly, now, doesn't appear to be anything worth the few lines I originally typed. Next time i'll be more careful to click the right hyperlink. I'll hand the hypothetical tongs back over to you, you may need them more than me. [Edited 5/31/08 7:56am]
