Prince's George Clintonesque songs? Inspired by the thread about Sly Stones influence on Princes music, i am starting a thread about the influence of George Clinton (and his P-funk protegees) on Princes music.
So, which Prince songs sound if they were influenced a lot by George Clinton? Personally i think Georges influence was most obvious during the Sign of the Times / Black album / Lovesexy era, but also an earlier Prince songs i hear the influence. Some of those 'earlier' examples are Erotic City and Automatic, pieces of electrofunk that remind me a lot of George Clintons work on his album 'Computer Games'. During the 'Sign of the Times' era you had: Housequake, with those weird, quasi psychedelic sound-effects, the hard funk of Shockedelica and especially La La La, He, He, He, with those 'cat' and 'dog' lyrics, and those vocal harmonies in the background, referring to Atomic dog by George Clinton. When it comes to the black album, Le Grind is one of the most P-funk like songs Prince ever recorded, alltough Cindy C. and Rock Hard in a funky place also show some George Clinton influence. I once read in a music magazine that George Clinton was originally intended to produce Lovesexy. Alltough i don't know what is true about his rumour, i think Clinton's influence is 'all over the place' on Lovesexy: The dry, electronic beats, the complex vocal harmonies and background vocals, the 'gnome' like voices popping up unexpectedly. When i think of Lovesexy, i often think it sounds like the result of some crazy, imaginative, all-star band, consisting of George Clinton, Jimi Hendrix, Duke Ellington and John Lennon... lol When it comes to the 'Clinton' influence in the nineties and '00 i think its often less obvious, more subdued: I sure hear it on We Can Funk (a pure P-funk collaberation between Prince and George), but more as 'one of the influences' on songs like: Get Off, I Rock, therefore I am, Now, Freaks on the side and some songs from The Exodus album. I once did read that Lovesexy should originally be produced by George Clinton, | |

Scarlet Pussy is the most obvious. I think the title track of 1999 is somewhat Parliament like.
