I confess I wouldn't know Radiohead from Adam's house cat but I can tell you that I've been treated to some excellent shows and great albums already this year without having to jump through hoops to get access to them. For all the talks of Prince now being stuck in the past when it come to the digital age, I think on the contrary he is taking the field forward, by indirectly pushing for more/new legislation. Nothinbutjoy said: In this period of rapid movement of information, media and art, the arguments raised by Prince are absolutely relevent. Laws governing copyright etc are antiquated and overdue for revision.
Unfortunately, in Prince's case, the subject has affected him as an artist. IMHO, issues...the music business treatment of artists and copyright issues...have adversely affected Prince's art/music. That's, for me is the saddest thing. His points are valid, but he presses his points in ways that are hypocritical and down right ass-y. As the song says...."It all comes out in the wash, in time." In this case a long, drawn out time.

Web Sherrif's take:
"Whilst Web Sheriff was not responsible for the latest round of YouTube clip removals, the point here is that prince actually has performers' rights in his stage and recorded performances and, as such, he's still entitled to pull these videos if he chooses to and regardless of whether or not he wrote the song. There is a very interesting comparison to be drawn between Radiohead and Prince who, between them, probably represent the spectrum of artist opinion on the use of the internet. Some artists are very relaxed about the use of their rights on the net, whereas others are more protective, which, at the end of the day, is the whole point - it's the artist's decision and no one else's JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

He'll be relevant as long as he wants to be. People talk a good game, but in reality they're still gonna go see him live. As fast as the news cycle moves these days. This will be forgotten about by the mainstream media, and the average listener. As long as he puts out music and tours people won't care. People are running around this place like Prince committed mass murder!!! Musicians have literally pissed on their fans. Invited children over to their house and molested them while they sleep, allegedly. And Burned them with a crack pipe. All those artists managed to stay relevant as long as they put out music!!! Prince hasn't committed a crime. He hasn't beaten anyone up in a nightclub. He hasn't been to rehab. He hasn't been caught lip syncing. But I guess all those artists are still around 'cause they let people watch their videos on a website!!! Like I said earlier, an artist can go to prison and the public doesn't care. There are artists out there who are a lot worse human beings than Prince, and they've managed to get away scott free!!! Has anyone here read Bobby Womack's book? Now THAT dude is an asshole!!! During all the reviews I read for Prince's Coachella appearance, I didn't see one mention of his battle with the internet!!! Some people here need to use their brains and think!!! Do you really think people are gonna stop buying Prince's albums and going to his concerts just because he doesn't let a few videos of crappy quality appear on Youtube??? For the literally dozens of people who's life this truly affects. There's millions of people out there who truly couldn't care less!!! I'm one of those millions!!! So, you've taken to following me around now? How mature of you...only not so much. I love that you find me so interesting though. Keep stopping by. When you say some people hear use their brains to think, you're clearly not talking about yourself, unless your brains are located up your ass. The problem with your argument (this one anyway), is that Prince hasn't put out any new music. His last record was released over a year ago & it was forgotten, save by zealots such as yourself, almost immediately on release. Remember when Prince could release high quality albums less than a year apart? I certainly do. Those days are long gone. The UK giveaway made more news than the music itself & people even lost interest in that, with the exception of brief mentions in the last few sentences of Prince's more recent PR debacles. He also hasn't toured recently, either. One-off shows, or residencies in Las Vegas or London are not tours & until he straps on that guitar in front of an audience in NYC, or Boston or Chicago, his legacy as a live performer (which is usually deserved) will continue to erode. Instead of making news for making interesting music again, or for amazing people night after night on the live stage, Prince has busied himself by threatening fans with legal action, going after fan sites, going after video sites that if he pulled his head out of his ass he might realize only serve to enhance his legacy (at no cost to him), or alienating fans who couldn't make a concert by playing the diva & preventing people from seeing his performance online as they were able to see several others. But he's your boy, so enjoy watching his downward spiral continue.

Yeah, for all of the negative attention it's afforded him, it's a bit of a misfire as a cover. Changing lyrics didn't work to well for him with his version of A Case of You, either. That's another song that didn't benefit much from Prince's spin.

He's kinda hot, but whata a bunghole, WTF was that.... I couldn't get past a few seconds that voice was annoying. I know, the voice sounds weird. It sounds like they snipped what he said and then cut and pasted the words together to make sentences. Very hard to listen to, I stopped listening after about 30 seconds. RIP, mom. This might stop him from doing them now. I know I won't miss them. Me neither. I don't like it when Prince does cover versions of other people's songs. I would rather hear a new jam or something previously unreleased from his vault. Wishful thinking, I know. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I agree with portions of your last paragraph, but the rest is totally not true. Prince is the one artist who has released music almost every year or every other year, whether you like them or not. He has also almost every year, performed live. Even though they were in different formats, he still performed. There are major artists out there who hardly tour or perform and release cds every 3-4-5 years or more. Look at MJ [Edited 5/31/08 7:25am]

Look at MJ [Edited 5/31/08 7:25am] This road has been walked before, but since Prince's musical output is clearly in decline in terms of quality over the last decade or so (and that's being generous), perhaps he would benefit from releasing albums only every 3-4 years. Perhaps between them, 3121, Planet Earth, Musicology, etc. could have generated enough tracks to make for one much stronger album than the three junkers they are individually. You can't compare Prince to MJ anymore. Jackson is a pariah, a nutter & far less about the music than anything else. His record releases are big deals BECAUSE they are so few & far between. Perhaps if Prince tried that approach, & put some serious thought into his artistry, instead of giving us the same old bland beats & by the numbers junk rock, there'd be something worth listening to again, beyond the first spin.
