1. more diverse
2. funkier
3. has more creative lyrics
4. more ground breaking

They don't even play in the same category: SOTT is one of 20th century Rock album's masterpieces ( with Jimi Hendrix, Beatles best ones). Bad was just made to be a best seller.

Bad has fond memories for me, and it's my favorite MJ album, but it doesn't even come close to Sign O' The Times.

6. Biggest seller
7. #1 for longest
7. More hit singles
9. Biggest Tour

falloff

So true.
Bad is crap compared to SOTT, but then again--it's crap compared to Thriller.

So those categories are skewed towards SOTT, and anyone who posts 'Bad' as the winner is a deranged MJ fan to begin with.

One could just make comparisons of Rave Un2 vs. Thriller. lol

I'm a pretty big MJ nut but I don't even think the most zealout MJ fan would pick Bad.

Bad was never intended to be anything other than a good pop album (and it succeeds in its mission). SOTT was obviously conceived to be the defining record of Prince's career.

However, if you were to compare the Bad tour to the SOTT tour, I'd pick Bad every time. MJ was on fire on that tour.

I don't own "Bad" however, I like Michael Jackson...I could not afford every album that I ever wanted. And plenty of times, I traded in 9cd'z 4 1.

I saw BAD live a few days after seeing Lovesexy live and I'd have to disagree absolutely there. Both the SOTT and Lovesexy tours were incredible (artistic direction, lighting, costume, humour, passion, imagination, songs, musicianship) . BAD was just watered down versions of his videos (same routines, same clothes) and him posing whilst saying 'I love you' ad nauseum.

As far as pop shows go, Madonna's was better than MJ's. Lovesexy was the best gig I ever saw and although I missed SOTT (he cancelled here in London), the film shows that it was possibly even better.

Never understood the appeal of SOTT. I don't know why its a "masterpiece". But I guess if people tell you it is, you have to believe it, or you suck.

I would compare Bad with Lovesexy in the point of production. They both are kinda clearly crystal in sound and kinda cold in the athmosphere.

Thriller could easily compared to Purple Rain..

That's me right there but Bad isn't my absolute favorite MJ album but it has a special place in my heart along with SOTT. That was quite a summer for me. biggrin

eek The first two words on SOTT are funkier than the BAD album all together.

LOL. Well Smooth Criminal is a very funky number as far as I'm concerned. Speed demon, Just Good Friends and Another Part of Me deliver the funk also! The only funky part from SOTT that springs to mind is that guitar solo at the end of SOTT.

OK - then we have a different understanding of what funk is. Just Good Friends has a touch. Smooth Criminal is a great pop song but funky???

On SOTT - SOTTT, IIWYG, Beautiful Night, IT, Strange Relationship...

Yeah, Smooth Criminal has an elements of funk in it. The bassline is quite funky and then there's the guitar 3/4 the way through. To be honest I can't really remember what IIWYGF sounds like because I have never liked that song.

IMO you can never compare an MJ album to a Prince album. Prince makes music that feels good to HIM [Like Billy said 'your music makes sense to no one but yourself]. What I mean by that is Prince has shown if he has to he can make a commerical track. BUT someone (label) has to make him. MJ on the other hand makes music for the public to consume. PERIOD. He works with the latest writers, producers and Musicians to make sure he will appeal to the masses.
Prince has yet to work with another producer. He does not care about radio play or album sales clearly. You can't compare the 2 in any way IMO
