Remember when he played that outro riff in "peach" in 1993? It must have been so classic to him that he turned it into a song : Chaos and Disorder. There are a lot more i think... There are two great ones in Electric Chair. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I don't think of him as a great riffmaker, but he has some signature guitar sounds, like:
Kiss--opening chord with the wah wah When Doves Cry--opening line Purple Rain--opening chords honorable mentions The Truth--nice blues line Zannalee 3rd Eye Gett Off My Legacy

The riff you're talking about is James Brown style chicken grease guitar. Opening of PR is a good call. But isn't Wendy actually palying it? Since it comes from the Avenue concert (her debut) and on the PR DVD someone comments that it was Wendy's idea to play the chord as a suspended Bb (I think sus2 to be exact).

i don't belive it was wendy's iudea to play sus2 chords because prince started playing purple rain chords during 1999 tour.
and you can find recording of purple rain from 1999 tour rehearsals and dez was playing that rhythm guitar part the same as wendy did one year latter

I didn't know they exist that early. but 1) was Dez plaything sus2? it's not always the most clearly audible difference esp on a live boot. 2) wendy was hanging around by that time and could've suggested it 3) it's what she says on the DVD so I guess you are saying she's lying [Edited 5/30/08 8:03am] [Edited 5/30/08 8:05am]

prince's guitar riffs are often doubled with keyboards so it's hard 2 say straight out riffs over chords progressions.
so besides bambi, i'm yours and y u wanna treat me so bad it's hard 2 pick one man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

The opening chord has a slow wah effect though it. It's different from the same chord when it's played in the chorus before "kiss." But you did teach me something. I never knew what he was saying before the solo. My Legacy

But is it a different wah-wah spped or a different guitar used for those JB style chords, compared to the really pronounced wah-wah during the guitar solo before the final verse?

Yeah the speed of the wah is controlled by a rocking pedal, like a gas pedal on a car. It's like a bass/treble knob that's attached to the pedal and you turn the knob back & forth while you play. Also, chords sound different than a single note solo. But there may be some other studio trickery going on. Maybe he doubled the part or added the effect after it was recorded, just to beef up the opening. I don't know. My Legacy

Endorphinmachine - A CLASSIC 70's rock riff
Guitar - I know it's close to a U2 riff, but I still like it a lot When U Were Mine - Got a bit of "Walk this Way" in it ICNTTPOYM - Not sure if a guitar plays it on the song, but it's a neat run and sounds AWESOME on a hard-rockin' set-up Computer Blue - It will never go down in history, but *I* love it Vavoom - Love it
