Purple Rain on Rolling Stone 100 greatest guitar songs of all time

19.- "Purple Rain"
Prince and the Revolution (1984)

Prince hadn't shown much inclination toward gospel before this movie theme, but if this solo isn't a prayer, nothing is. Partly recorded live, the song ascends for eight minutes, and Prince's guitar is an extension of his voice; at 2007's Super Bowl, it made the actual rain seem miraculous.

As much as I love this song, I never really thought it was a "guitar" song like it's always characterized as. The solo is cool but its buried in the mix of the song.
I bet they are going by the live versions of it.

Yep. I wrote a thread on here about this solo. It's P's signiture guitar solo and I think he identifies with it as such. No matter what band line up he's using, what year, what tour or what mood he's in, he can channel all of that into that solo. It's one of my all time favorite solos by anyone. No matter how many times I've seen him do it, over the years, he's stayed pretty true to the album version. Because he's played it so many times, he's precision on it can cut glass. It's to his credit that he hasn't lost his "feeling" or emotion when he still plays it. That's how I can tell it's important to him.

Isn't this the same thread as the other one? I know I posted on this one...
