Planet Earth 1 Year Old 2 Month and 1 Week From Today As I sat by the shore at Tiburon, today, I listened to the Planet Earth CD. I imagined what life would be like without clean water, fresh air and sunshine.
50 years from now what will they say about us here? Did we care for the water and the fragile atmosphere? There are only 2 kinds of folk And the difference they make The ones that give And the ones that take Happy B-Day Planet Earth! And, welcome to California, Orgers. Edit: Oooops, I can't count. It was July 24! So, I'm a litle earl. [Edited 5/18/08 11:33am]

Not too far from when I last listened to it either. Still, it's not as bad a Musicology or Come. Has had as many listens mind you. And back to the point... the Earth will survive longer than us. Until we rip it in two it will keep on doing what it does. It's been an inhospitable planet for longer than it has been the opposite. As humans we don't half value ourselves highly.

Like, "She Loves Me For Me?" - I believe he was sincere at the time he wrote it but it's too bad that relationship didn't last. Personally, when he was married to his last wife, I really wished them the best and thought it would last forever. I thought it was sweet he wrote that song for his wife.

I think PE and 3121 are step ups from Musicology and probably as good as we can get from him at this point in his life.

As I look back now on this album and how it was viewed and its place in the history of Prince and his music, I would have to say that "Planet Earth" was one of the most polarizing albums of the man's career. Seriously, the people that love it REALLY REALLY love it. But the people that hate it REALLY hate it. I mean, they show no mercy on this one. But I sometimes think their reason is unfair and irrational. Either they miss the old Prince, or they want the funky side of Prince (let's face it, he won't be coming with that funk that he did in the 80's today, so suck it up and deal with it.), or they think he's not pushing new musical ground, or his performance was not up to par.
Whatever. Look, Prince isn't just a funk artist. He's a MUSICIAN that plays at many styles like Funk, Rock, Pop, Jazz, Soul, New Wave , Blues, Hip-Hop, etc. Some orgers seem to think that Prince owes them the album of their dreams or whatever. But the reality is he's gonna make whatever kind of music he's gonna make, and we have to either accept it or not. With that said, "Planet Earth" is not a bad album. Maybe there's a couple of weak tracks, but you can't really put it up there with his top 5 from the 80's (Parade, Dirty Mind, 1999, Purple Rain, SOTT). And I don't think he's trying to outdo his top 5 at this point. He's just trying to make happy, fun, light-hearted music, and this is what "Planet Earth" exemplifies. And I stand by my statement when I say that if this album were by any other artist (let's say, a completely new and up-and-coming artist) then it would probably get more credit. But since Prince set the bar so high, folks won't settle for something sub-standard. But I'm someone who respects all of Prince's music, the good, the bad, and the funky. His sub-standard albums can sometimes include some tracks that will still make me dance and smile. He's so talented that even his crappy stuff sounds halfway decent, especially when you compare it to a lot of the garbage you hear on the radio these days. I mean, Prince would be insulted if he heard half the negative reviews of P.E. It's not a bad album, and I for one feel it doesn't deserve unfair criticism. That's all I have to say on this thread. There is a difference between hating it and not rating it. I fall into the latter. An album to be lost amongst the many other hundreds of releases that year. There were far better albums released during that period from many other artists. It's not a bad album just a little 'vanilla'. Meh.
