I dug it then and although I haven't liste0ned to it in awhile dig it today.

He was thinking totally outside the box. As a fan of the P-Funk Empire I could truly appreciate this. It was innovative and cutting edge FUNK.

While everyone was trying to sound "exactly" like P-Funk he came with a new concept and sound without being a blatant copycat.

After the Mothership came in for a crash landing the big three(Gap Band, Prince and Rick James) were battling it out to see who would take the Funk Throne after P-Funk.

Rick James was holding it down for awhile but "this lp" had to be seriously threatening to him.

P.F. George's dropping of Atomic Dog later was more cutting edge and innovative than anything even on this lp. Caught me off guard as I was waiting on P-Funk's return.

Sounds dark, evil and funky like Flashlight. Heavy bass thick base stack.

That scream (or series of screams) in Something in the Water is one of the greatest moments in Prince history. Human beings should not be able to make such noises.

The lp was Parliament and Funkadelic at the same time.

Can't say I've listened to either much lately, but I've never found CG a great trak2trak experience; always skipping around. 1999 definitely plays better, but it's so long I don't get the whole thing in one sitting.

I hadn't thought to put these two up against each other, but if I wasn't jammin Prince (1999, Controversy), Rick James (Street Songs, Throwin' Down), then it was The Time debut and What Time Is It?. With the exception of TD all flow better trak2trak than CG

Oh yeah, Luther was breaking out too and his stuff was blowing everybody away and Stevie was kind of silent, but Gap rushed in with straight-up rips of Stevie's bass-synth grooves on "Bomb" "Party Train" and "Outstanding".
