My understanding of the legalities:
Once a song has been commercially released, and as long as you pay royalties, you can record it and release it, as long as you don't change the lyrics or fundamentally change the melody. So anyone can record a Prince covers album - but Weird Al never gets to release his spoofs. Copyright isn't an issue. | |
