The first album was recorded mostly in California, just outside San Francisco, starting October 1977.

The second album was recorded in two different studios in Los Angeles, through April and May, 1979.

The third album was recorded on a 16 track installed in the basement of his rented home, near Lake Minnetonka (May and June 1980), and completed in Los Angeles.

The fourth album was started during the summer of 1981 in his new home, with more work uindertaken in Los Angeles subsequently.

It was only during 1982 when Prince had a 24 track machine installed in his basement and he started work on his fifth album, 1999.

Technically speaking, Uptown is a district of Minneapolis. So, conceptually, if 'Uptown' is where Prince recorded his first 4 albums, then he is simply using the name to cover a number of places in reality. I think it's just a figurative expression.

Incidentally, I would rely on 'Days Of Wild', 'DanceMusicSexRomance', and 'Turn It Up' over and above 'Purple Reign'/'Slave To The Rhythm' as an accurate reference source
ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.
