What's the closest U believe Prince has come to ever writing another Purple Rain?

We all know he said Gold was going to be the next Purple Rain... but in ur mind, what song was closest to the next Purple Rain?

for me it has to be Gold (Obviously), The Ladder, and Slow Love.

Unclear on the question.
Another Purple Rain in what sense?
Commercial acceptance? Sales? style, length subject matter????

Gold could have been big, it has that same epic feel without being too preachy like The Last December, but he'd lost his mind at that point & the music buying public knew it & steered clear.

When he took back NC2U or maybe Diamonds and Pearls.

PR was this soul hair metal power ballad fusion he did on purpose. After that pretty much everyone was doing that so he of course went the other way. He also toned down or held onto his material like that.

But those two songs had almost the same feel and they were both focused pop efforts that mainstream ate up.

Yes what do you mean by closest? I'd be voting for If I Was Your Girlfriend maybe if you mean a song which stands up after all this time and is still eerily affecting no matter how many times you hear it and gets pretty much unanimous critical praise. If you mean like a great big stadium rock ballad maybe Nothing compares 2 u?
You might not like the taste but I'm still gonna stick your face in this FUNK

I think the Movie is what made that song so popular at the time and has kept it a classic,. If there was a movie behind let's say GOLD that would have made it.

What I mean by the "next" Purple Rain is a song that can define him in one song (even tho we all know that is not possible) Purple Rain is very much so his signature song.... it's so undeniable. i have a friend who swore he hated prince and that his only good song was Little Red Corvette. I made him listen to Purple Rain all the way thru and his mind was changed.

I don't know if you mean the fame of the song, or the sentiment.
I would say, "Adore" for the fame.
"Diamonds and Pearls, for the sentiment. and "Call my Name," for the sweetness of that kind of love.

I'm gonna have to go with a lot of folks here and say "Last December" since "Gold" isn't all that. I don't know what some of y'all are thinking.

But I could also take the high road and say "Anna Stesia".

In the UK it would be Kiss, 1999, When Doves Cry - signature songs

Probably The Ladder, with a vocal solo in place of a guitar solo.

Gold is probably the most self conscious attempt to copy it, followed by Last December (which I prefer)
